Long before Renagado BJJ opened its doors, a lot of the ideas behind how we train here were already taking shape.

I wrote Roll to the Top because I’ve always believed that competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is about more than knowing techniques. It’s about understanding your own game, making good decisions, managing the score and the clock, recognizing situations, and having a plan for where you want the match to go.

That same philosophy is a big part of the culture at Renagado.

We want our students to understand not only what they’re doing, but why they’re doing it.

That’s one of the reasons we have a Competition & Strategy Lab. It’s why we talk about game planning, decision-making and match strategy alongside technique.

You don’t have to be a serious competitor to benefit from learning to think strategically on the mat.

Good Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just a collection of moves.

It’s learning how to put them together.

Serious Jiu-Jitsu. Still Allowed to Smile.

Charlotte may be taking Chandler’s back here, but judging by the smiles, nobody seems too upset about it. 😄

Renagado BJJ is an adult-focused academy, but we also have a growing kids program built around the same things we value throughout the gym: learning useful skills, working with good training partners, becoming more confident, and enjoying the process.

Our kids classes meet Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:00 PM.

And for families who train with us, we offer a substantial Child of an Adult Member discount — because while the kids and adults have their own separate classes, we love having families who make jiu-jitsu part of their lives together.

Good training. Good teammates. Plenty of smiles.

A good training room isn’t built around finding the perfect partner.

Some rounds are with someone bigger. Some are with someone smaller. Someone newer. Someone more experienced. Someone whose game gives you problems.

That variety is part of what makes you better.

At Renagado, we want people moving around the room, training with different bodies, different styles and different levels of experience — because every partner has something to teach you.

And just as importantly, every round is a chance for you to be a good training partner for someone else.

That’s how a room gets better together.

No Gi Fundamentals at Renagado.

Fundamentals aren’t something you graduate from.

The better you get at Jiu-Jitsu, the more you appreciate the value of good positioning, movement, pressure, escapes, and simple techniques done well.

That’s why our Fundamentals classes aren’t just for brand-new students. You’ll see beginners learning alongside experienced grapplers, with everyone working on the same goal: building better Jiu-Jitsu from the ground up.

No egos. No separate corner for the new people. Just teammates helping teammates get better.

Strong fundamentals. Good training partners. Better Jiu-Jitsu.

Jiu-jitsu isn’t something you learn just by watching.

You learn it by feeling pressure. Making decisions. Trying something, having it fail, adjusting, and trying again.

That’s why so much of our training at Renagado involves working against real resistance.

Technique matters. Instruction matters. Drilling matters.

But eventually, you have to solve the problem in front of you.

Different partners give you different looks. Different reactions create different problems. And every round gives you another opportunity to make your jiu-jitsu a little more adaptable.

We’re not trying to memorize all the answers.

We’re learning how to find them.

Wednesday nights are a little different at Renagado.

Our Competition & Strategy Lab isn’t a traditional gi class or no-gi class. It’s a place to work on the parts of jiu-jitsu that carry across both.

Position. Timing. Decision-making. Escapes. Control. Understanding when to attack, when to settle, and when to change direction.

Some people in the room are preparing for competition. Others simply want to become smarter, more adaptable grapplers. Both belong here.

The uniform may change. The problem-solving doesn’t.

Train with purpose. Learn to make better decisions. Build a game you can trust.

No Masters. Only Mentors.

Friday night at Renagado.

No-Gi Advanced isn’t about collecting techniques. It’s about learning how to make your jiu-jitsu work against someone who is actively trying to stop you.

Live rounds give us the chance to test decisions, timing, pressure, escapes, control and submissions in real time. Sometimes you’re rolling. Sometimes you’re watching. Either way, you’re learning.

And the room matters.

Good training partners push you without turning every round into a fight. Upper belts help develop newer students. Everyone gets challenged, and everyone contributes to making the room better.

That’s the kind of training culture we’re building at Renagado.

Train hard. Help your teammates improve. Keep getting better.

Last night in Advanced Gi, we took away one of our biggest advantages: sight.

During part of our live training, one partner rolled blindfolded.

Why?

Because jiu-jitsu isn’t only about seeing what your opponent is doing. It’s about developing sensitivity to pressure, balance, weight distribution, movement, connection, and timing.

Take away vision and you’re forced to pay attention to information you might normally ignore.

At Renagado, we use a variety of training methods—traditional drilling, positional sparring, live rolling, constrained games, and occasionally challenges like this—to develop adaptable, thinking grapplers.

There isn’t one perfect way to train.

Different methods develop different skills.

The goal is always the same: better jiu-jitsu.

No Masters. Only Mentors.
