Alister MacKenzie’s 10th design principle, outlined in "13 Essential Features of an Ideal Golf Course" (c: 1920), reads simply:

No lost balls.

"There should be a complete absence of the annoyance and irritation caused by the necessity of looking for lost balls."

“We came in Friday morning [March 13]. It was kind of a surprise. There wasn’t much chance of precipitation in the forecast, but we had about an inch of nice wet snow,” said Andrew Getty, our Dunes superintendent.

It's been, to this point, a true miracle.

Thank you all for the continued prayers for everyone in our area and everyone in our state.

With temperatures and wind still moving, we're on continued day-by-day watch, as our area is in an ongoing Red Flag Warning.

Thank you for the story, Casey & the News Channel Nebraska team. We appreciate you coming out and sharing.

A fast-moving wildfire that tore through parts of the Nebraska Sandhills came dangerously close to The Prairie Club and nearby homes Thursday, forcing evacuations and leaving residents fearing the worst.

UPDATE (3/17/2026)

Yesterday was the clearest and cleanest that the canyon smoke has been since Thursday, before the fires first entered our area.

There are still smoke spots in the canyon that we're keeping an watchful eye on.

With temps dropping to as low as 0° (and the winds dropping), we're grateful for the progress.

In terms of damage to our property, we've been incredibly fortunate. The Pines Course was under the greatest threat and so far, we're able to report no substantial damage at all has taken place on our golf courses.

As temps move back up into the mid-70s this week, we will be monitoring the situation incredibly closely. We suspect that the logs and debris will smolder for quite a few days.

In total, the fire in our area (Kilgore, Valentine, Merritt, and the McKelvie Forest) has claimed nearly 20,000 acres, while fires across Nebraska have claimed well over 600,000 acres — and growing.

Please keep the entire state in your prayers.

If you're looking for ways to support this area, here are a few:

➡️ Valentine Volunteer Fire Department: Their crew, led by Chief Terry Engles, has been working tirelessly to fight the fires around the area. They spent many, many hours on our property and their efforts were crucial.

To donate, you may send checks directly to:

➡️ Nebraska Supports Nebraska for Wildfire Relief: The News Channel Nebraska has partnered with the Nebraska Sandhills Rancher Fire Relief to raise money in a coordinated, statewide campaign for relief. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/4daYl7d

Thank you all for the care, attention, support, and prayer this past week.

We hope to be on the path to recovery soon.

UPDATE (3/15/2026)

We are incredibly grateful for the overnight snowfall covering much of our property and the canyon. By 9:30AM CDT, we are still seeing some light snowfall.

The precipitation is a massive blessing and should help mitigate some of the spread of the remaining spot threats.

There is still smoldering smoke to the west and north of 10 Pines and in a few other little spots throughout the canyon.

However, the winds are shifting to move toward our club. They are expected to gust up to 40 MPH today and we are hoping they slowly subside. Our team is on property monitoring the situation hourly. The next 12 hours are crucial.

Thank you all for the continued prayers and support. We're not out of trouble yet.

A massive thank you to every single one of our agronomy team members keeping active watch on our property. They've gone above and beyond.

A massive thank you also to the local volunteer fire departments from throughout the area who have helped serve our club, the residents, and the canyon we all love.

We will continue to provide updates as we have them.

UPDATE (3/14/2026)

All day yesterday, volunteer fire crews from Valentine stood at the rim of the Snake River canyon — facing West — monitoring a dozen or more spot fires that continued to take grasses and low cover throughout our canyon. It has proven difficult to track each spot fire with lack of road access West of the river.

Overhead aerial support worked to treat active threats with waterbombing efforts.

The raging hot fires from Thursday evening have mostly all subsided, thankfully. Smoke was still heavy. Overnight last night went well.

We're hesitant to use the word miracle yet, but it's felt like one thus far. Everyone has remained safe.

Most of the wildfires swept through the south end of our property, moving from adjacent to 16 Pines fairway — where Steer Creek feeds into the Snake River — all the way down to the Pines Reserve development south of the club.

The majority of the damage was on the West side of the river. The fires hopped the river south of the club and swept through the development, though only a few small structures were taken. All primary homes remained protected, despite expansive prairie loss and thousands of charred ponderosa pine trees.

At this point, there has been no significant damage to our Pines Course trees or any of the structures on the property.

We are not yet in the clear, as the spot fires are still present and winds are expected to pick up into the 30-40MPH range into Sunday. There is also a 30-50% chance of precipitation from this evening through Sunday mid-morning, as a cold front moves through. We'll take every drop of precipitation that we can get. Humidity levels climbing would help.

All prayers have been felt and deeply appreciated. Thank you!

Our team has been monitoring the situation intently and the fire crews have served our area tirelessly. Our gratitude has no words and we're incredibly fortunate, so far.

Please continue to pray for full protection and safety of everyone monitoring the situation.
