A Stanford medicine study found that aging might not occur in a linear fashion as once thought but rather in “bursts” around the ages of 44 and 60.
In the first wave, mid 40s, shifts in alcohol metabolism, fat metabolism, and skin and muscle structure were more significant.
Around age 60, more changes with immune system. system decline, carbohydrate metabolism, and continued muscle deterioration.
While there are several things you can do to support these changes but one of the big lifestyle interventions is using exercise modalities to maintain muscle mass.
Following a structured weightlifting program is hands-down the best way to maintain muscle mass and prevent/slow age related muscle loss.
This doesn’t mean other forms of exercise are bad or that lifting weights here and there does nothing for you. All exercise contributes to overall health, but there is nothing that will support your muscle like lifting weights to get stronger. 💪
