I coach business owners and visionaries to get what they want from their business.
That means working alongside them and their teams to align around a shared mission, develop high performers, and execute on the vision with clarity and conviction.
Recently, I was in a session with a client and their team when one of the team members said:
"I've got some head trash."
Normal? Completely. We all have it.
But what happened next is where most leaders either lose the moment or own it.
I didn't move past it. I coached it.
Because "head trash" is never just a throwaway phrase. It's a signal. There's a story running underneath the surface, and if it stays unchallenged, it will quietly erode behavior, decisions, and the team's ability to execute.
High-performing teams don't get there by ignoring what's going on inside the people on them.
So here's exactly how I coached that moment, and how you can too the next time you hear it from your team:
1. "What specifically are you telling yourself right now?"
Head trash is vague. Clarity is where change begins.
2. "What are you doing to challenge or change that?"
This is where ownership enters the conversation.
3. "Who's helping you work through it, or are you carrying this alone?"
Isolated people struggle longer than supported ones.
4. "If that story stays unchallenged, how will it show up in your leadership?"
Because it will. In their tone, their decisions, and the energy they bring to the mission.
Here's what I know after years of doing this work:
Unmanaged thinking becomes a pattern.
Patterns become identity.
Identity drives results.
Your team cannot execute on a vision they don't believe in. And they cannot believe in the vision if they don't believe in themselves.
So when someone says "head trash," don't brush past it. That's your moment to lead.
I help visionaries and teams get out of their heads, clarify, simplify, and activate their mission.
We need more mission-driven leaders to step up and lead with more clarity and less chaos. If you or your team are stuck in the loop, it's time to make your next leap.
