Since this little jungle gem is raising interest by some, here a few details for the curious voyagers…
Chosen for its remote location, limited cell reception and immersive jungle experience, Verana is a perfect spot to unplug. You begin the unplugging process already at Puerto Vallarta's airport, where you leave behind thousands of cruise ship & resort tourists that arrive here on a daily basis. 90 min by car, another 30 min by boat and a 15 min trek up the hill, deeper into the jungle and you’ll arrive at Verana, welcomed by a margarita or three.
Barely noticeable from below, this boho boutique hotel blends perfectly into the existing habitat, its open air palapas/rooms, the bar/restaurant and spa/pool area stretching along the hillside. If you’re not solid on foot, this might not be the place for you.
We chose the ‘Pool House’ for its private pool and fully immersive jungle experience… no walls, no AC. During rainy season a relatively ballsy choice as it turns out. I stopped counting the mosquito welts once I reached 60! The breathtaking views, the tranquility and the ability to be outdoors during the whole stay are priceless for the over-worked and over-stimulated mind, though and it’s inevitable to start unwinding.
That’s until night falls and the cacophony of meditative jungle sounds morphs into the soundtrack of a horror movie with countless predator seemingly lurking behind the thick jungle foliage. An utter exaggeration of course, but my inner city girl recoiled a few times, i.e. when a particularly inquisitive toad the size of a ripe cantaloupe claimed our pool area and a bold coatimundi (not honey badger I learned) left two dumps next to my bed, revenge for not sharing my b'fast biscuit the day before. Also… be aware of scorpions —> no barefoot wandering.
In short… major thumbs up for a visit at , unless you are kind of vacationer who prefers steril surroundings, consistent 68 degree room temps and a full spread continental brekkie. Nothing wrong with that, but this ain’t it. Luckily. 💚🤍❤️
