What a great time of year for a refresher course and to get ready for next year. That new season of barrel racing will be upon us before you know it. Who knows - for you - it might have already started.
Please consider this amazing clinic at the beautiful Sky Ranch in Van, TX.
We have 2 groups - the more beginner riders and then the more advanced riders. No matter where you are in your riding career - we can help you.
Our secret weapon is Murray McKenzie in the video room - critiquing the runs. Are you looking for a very small amount of time on the clock to be able to move up to the 1D. Believe me when I say - “The video doesn’t lie.”
Murray can slow it down and he can see everything. Just ask Jennifer Burgess. LOL
Learning how to watch the video is so important. Das and husbands of barrel racers - come and learn from the best so you can (not criticize) but help your favorite barrel racer get to her (or his) best potential.
I’m putting a little secret in the first comment!

Arkansas - here we come and Jennifer Burgess is coming with us. You got a problem horse - she’s the one to help you out.
You got a young rider that needs to get started out right - then you need to be there.
Last clinic of the year.
Hope to see you there.

Hey Everybody - this is our last clinic in TX this year. It will be held at the beautiful Sky Ranch in Van, TX. Our daughter - Jennifer Burgess - will be there to help with any training issues you might have.
We work on skill in the saddle. These skills will let you learn how to ride all kinds of horses.
We work on thinking better. How many people beat themselves before they ever make the competitive. You can get to a point where you have have a mental plan in order to ride these better horses and compete at the bigger races. Last but not least we learn how to take better care of our horses. Barrel Racing is not a Farm event. It’s a serious sport with lots of money. Some colleges are giving scholarships to good barrel racers - along with breakaway ropers and goat tiers.
Come and learn with us - you will be glad we did.

Ok - I’m revisiting this issue with some pictures. Also, I had a conversation with Lisa Atwell Smith who is an amazing vet tech in our area and she even agreed with me that our horses backs are indeed changing. She said it used to take them 3-4 X-rays to do the whole back but now they are able to do it in 2-3 X-rays. Listen, this isn’t a bad thing! It means the breeders are doing their job of breeding a more athletic horse that is built for running barrels. So the oldest horse I have in my barn is 5. I took side profile pictures and drew a line where the withers stop and the back starts.
Saddle makers - yall have done a phenomenal job of making saddles fit. But once again I think we are seeing a change in the conformation of backs. The change I’m referring to isn’t a big change, it’s a small one that could make a huge difference. When fitting these horses, take in to account how far back the withers go. But just as a matter of basic build, if you would consider raising the ground seat even 1”, it would alleviate the issue I’m talking about.

Just a reminder that this clinic is coming up. This is our only Texas Clinic. Don’t think y’all want to miss it. Sky Ranch is a beautiful place and the ground is always good. It’s a perfect opportunity to learn good skills in the saddle - learn how to think better and learn how to take better care of your horses.
These 3 categories take a lifetime to learn and here they are presented in a weekend.
My daughter - Jennifer Burgess - will be helping me out. Jennifer is a Futurity horse trainer and can help you with any training problems you might be having with your horse.
Murray McKenzie is our secret weapon in the video room. I cannot tell you how many moms and dads he has helped to understand how to legitimately be able to help their young barrel racer run a better pattern.
It’s an awesome opportunity to get faster because you become a better rider!
