Not even me at first.

Even though diabetes ran in my family, my Type 2 diagnosis hit me hard. And honestly? The shame was brutal.

I remember leaving the doctorโ€™s office with a prescription, a referralโ€ฆ and tears in my eyes.

Everyone told me:
Lose weight.
Exercise more.
Watch your carbs.

But almost no one explained HOW to actually do that in real life without feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or deprived.

At night, fear kept me awake.
I worried about complications.
I worried about losing my independence.
I worried I had somehow failed myself.

But little by little, things changed.
Not through perfection.
Not through starvation diets.
Not through giving up every food I loved. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I recently read an insightful post by Steven Lawson, founder of MonkManual.com. His work is based on 10 principles followed by monks โ€” and one of his ideas really resonated with me.

He talked about space โ€” not the NASA kind, but the kind we live in every day. The space in our homes, our minds, and our hearts.

Hereโ€™s the thing: We canโ€™t actually create more space. The space we have โ€” our time, energy, and capacity โ€” stays the same. What changes is how much of it weโ€™ve already filled.

We pack our schedules with commitments, to-dos, and responsibilities (and letโ€™s be honest, a fair bit of guilt). Somewhere along the way, self-care quietly slips off the list.

Stevenโ€™s advice hit home for me: If you want more space in your life โ€” in your head or your heart โ€” you have to let go of whatโ€™s already taking it up.

That might mean possessions, habits, expectations, or even relationships that no longer fit the life youโ€™re growing into.

Sometimes itโ€™s like the โ€œvolunteerโ€ tomato plants that popped up in my garden this year โ€” I didnโ€™t plant them, but they grew anyway.

It made me realize something: just because you donโ€™t see your progress doesnโ€™t mean growth isnโ€™t happening.

Instead of only focusing on how far you still have to goโ€ฆ take a moment to notice how far youโ€™ve already come. That shift changes everything.
