It has been a crazy busy week with A LOT of activity crammed into a short period of time which has left little time for adequate rest, recovery, and nutrition. CUE a run down immune system and all the crummy feelings that go with it. We have ALL been there! ESPECIALLY during the winter (cold/flu season, changing weather, and now COVID). So, you may be wondering...should I still work out when I am sick (and sweat it out)? Or, should I skip my workout and rest?
A GENERAL rule of thumb is if your symptoms are above the neck--sore throat, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, it is typically still OK to exercise. But, if your symptoms are below the neck--chest congestion or hacking cough, muscle aches, fever, fatigue, or upset stomach, it is probably a better idea to REST.
If you're not feeling 100% but still want to move your body--simply reduce your effort. Walk instead of jog/run; do 1 set instead of 3; or try a lower impact activity (yoga or pilates).
Whatever you do decide, ALWAYS listen to YOUR body. Taking 2 or 3 days off isn't going to sabotage your fitness. Be sure to increase your fluid intake to maintain adequate hydration, practice good hand hygiene, eat nutritious food, and get enough sleep!
