Swing Harder❓

Not so fast.

Most of the time when we catch our hitters trying to hit the ball harder, trying to swing harder, and trying to muscle up, they lose the MOST IMPORTANT thing in hitting when it comes to barreling up the ball and hitting the ball hard…

👉STAYING WHIPPY.

We spend a lot of time talking about this. when we can achieve an EFFORTLESS swing, the BAT SPEED and EXIT VELO follows.

Can I execute that goal on this specific pitch❓
Can I hit the crap out of the ball❓

Hitters have minimal time to decipher swing or don’t swing. We want…YES, YES, YES…. and at the last second either PULL THE TRIGGER❗️

Good discussion here with .baker_16 on the relationship between pitch proximity and contact point.

Sometimes “FEEL” and “REAL” can be slightly different.

In case you guys haven’t seen, Will is absolutely crushing it for the hot 10-1 Jackets. Currently hitting .500 with 7 extra base hits and an OBP over .600.

Coach talks about the difference between ACTUAL velocity and PERCEIVED velocity.

Truth is…the hitter doesn’t have a little radar number pop up in his head when the ball is flying towards home plate. They see ball, they decide quickly to either hit ball or not hit ball. That’s it!

This is why you’ll never (or should never) be recruited on velocity alone.
Your command matters.
The ability to change speed matters.
Keeping hitters off balance matters.

Simply put, you want the hitter to think it’s difficult to hit off you. Whether the radar says 78 or 98.
