Almost two months ago, at my last rugby match of the year, my knee was speared in a ruck. It was hyperextended, resulting in my leg bones smashing into one another, with many possible issues.
Initially, it was assumed my meniscus was beat and there could be the possibility of meniscus damage. After an xray and mri (a month later) I received a better diagnosis of a Type III compression fracture with no apparent ligament or meniscus damage and no displacement. No surgery!
As of the end of this week I have been cleared for semi-normal activity. Not being able to help effectively around the house, participate in activities I enjoy, or even work well in this short time has put some things into perspective. I'm thankful that this wasn't as bad as it could have been, I'm also thankful for every squat rep I get to do in the coming months.
If anything this is a testament to lifting for in-season sports. You can't prevent an injury but you can be more resilient when it does happen.
Thanks to my wife for being supportive of all my athletic endeavors and for not letting my pity party go on too long.
