Your nose is an amazing technology. Yet most people don’t utilize it very well and prefer to continue using a “square wheel.” After all, mouth breathing is familiar and round wheels seem risky... what if you roll backward😳?

When you experience the benefits nasal breathing and realize that your nose is the perfect regulator for aerobic training, healthy respiratory function and metabolism … it feels crazy that you weren’t willing to slow down long enough to recognize what you’ve been missing out on.

Thankfully, awareness is growing for the “round wheel” that is nasal breathing. You can do a quick web search and find a ton of features and scientific articles pointing toward the benefits but here are a few notable reasons it is worth exploring:

👃🏼The increased resistance of your nose (as a result of the smaller airway) helps activate the diaphragm and accelerates inspired air to reach the lower lobes of the lungs where there is significantly more surface area and blood for greater oxygen absorption.

👃🏼Nasal breathing encourages the retention of a healthy amount of CO2 which in turn makes oxygen more bioavailable in the body.

👃🏼Nitric Oxide produced in the nasal cavity is delivered to the lungs thereby increasing oxygen absorption in the aveoli.

👃🏼The nose acts as a filter and helps remove airborne pathogens and dust. The increase in Nitric Oxide also provides anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties.

👃🏼Nasal breathing helps the body maintain hydration reducing the need to constantly drink water during a cardio workout.

In the current state of the world that sounds radical and terrifying to many. How could microorganisms in our environment be ok to breathe much less represent an asset to our health??

Let’s be careful. We don’t fully understand the variables of this situation. Let’s make sure our reaction does not create a fearful program within us.

At the conclusion of our group walk down a country road through the forest , I vividly remember thanking Dr. Zach Bush and receiving one of the deepest, most present hugs imaginable. Beyond polite, rather an extended embrace. It was long enough that my mind had multiple opportunities to wonder when it would end, social norms and barriers fell, then l become present to receive the genuine care of a fellow human.

Looking back on that now, it sounds like an event from a different planet. It is my hope we move through the current state and not become carriers of a program within us that makes this type of interaction distant and impossible. Instead I intend to anchor my memory and understanding that breath, environment, and fellow humanity are a synergy worth fighting for.
