Congrats to our Springhaven competitors for the 2026 season:

Avery Beucler - Reserve Champion JR/YR Training Level

Tiffany Rose Carlotti - Reserve Champion Second Level Open (also earned her Bronze Medal this year!)

Pearlie Rohrbacher - Champion Grand Prix Open (for the second year in a row!) and Reserve Champion Third Level Open (Santana’s first season showing Third Level!)

Competitors please read the new USEF rules effective 12/1/26. No double bridles at Third Level and only smooth rowels. Other rules as well but these two are major changes.

Great explanation!

A zig-zag involves linking more than two half-passes to the left and right.

Each half-pass should cover the same distance on each side.

When ridden in canter, the test will give you a precise number of strides in each direction. You straighten on the last stride in preparation for the flying change, and then the flying change is the first stride in the opposite direction.

-----

NOTE: As you ride your zig-zag, you may not get over the quarterline, and that's okay. We originally drew the changes of directions ON the quarterlines, but didn't want people to assume that (in canter) that's where you change. So, we drew them a little bit beyond the quarterline (as opposed to just shy of them), as it's best to aim for sweeping ground-covering half-passes.
But ultimately, you change direction after 3 or 6 canter strides, demonstrating as much lateral reach as your horse is comfortably capable of.

Had a fun time at the awards luncheon on Sunday. Indebted to Dinoco for being a patient teacher, and to his owner Sue for letting me ride! Grateful for the Las Vegas dressage community, and especially Jean Wolff for her dedication as the president of our chapter’s board. She spends countless hours supporting our sport… she is a hero!
