I was saddened to hear about the passing of Wendell Berry.

His writing has always carried a simple but challenging invitation...to remember that we belong to this world.

Not above it. Not separate from it. Part of it.

I think yoga asks something similar of us. To slow down enough to pay attention - to our breath, our bodies, the people around us, and the living world that holds all of it.

And perhaps attention is where love begins.

The more time I spend near the ocean, working at Caspar Cove, walking in the woods, or exploring outside with Quinn, the more I feel this. When we really come to know a place, it becomes harder not to love it. And when we love something, we naturally want to care for it.

So in honor of Wendell Berry, I’d love to invite you to turn some of that attention into action by taking part in California Coastal Cleanup Day on September 19 - wherever you happen to be. Find a beach, creek, park, neighborhood, or cleanup in your community and spend a little time caring for this beautiful world we share.

And if you’re in the East Bay, Stephanie, Quinn, and I would love to have you join us at the Shorebird Park Nature Center at the Berkeley Marina.

I’ve been thinking about Dolly Parton & the way she seemed to move through the world with so much humor, generosity, kindness, & authenticity.

And I keep coming back to one simple question:

What We Leave Behind

Sometimes,
the greatest lessons
arrive without words.

A sunset.
A quiet trail.
Cold water.
A forest breathing.
The sound of waves
meeting the shore.

These moments ask nothing of us
except our presence.

As I grow older,
I find myself wondering
less about what I can leave behind,
and more about
what I can help another fall in love with.

Because we rarely protect
what we have never known.

And we naturally care
for what has captured our hearts.

Perhaps that is how love
is passed from one generation
to the next.

Not through lectures.

Not through fear.

But through shared wonder.
Through muddy shoes,
windblown hair,
salty skin,
and the quiet awe
of standing together
before something larger than ourselves.

Maybe the greatest inheritance
we can offer
is not certainty.

Not success.

Not even answers.

Perhaps it is a living relationship
with this beautiful, fragile world.

To teach someone
to pause before a sunset.
To kneel beside a tide pool.
To look up at the stars.
To discover
that they belong to the Earth,
and that the Earth
belongs in their heart.

For love always comes first.

And from love,
care naturally follows.

Last night after dinner, Quinn & I headed out on an important mission...
To find caterpillars.
As the sun was setting, we wandered through the neighborhood looking on fennel & milkweed and under leaves, carefully collecting a few little future butterflies to bring home and watch transform.
It struck me that this has become one of my favorite parts of being a dad - because I get a front-row seat to watching Quinn transform.

So much of our lives are spent chasing the next accomplishment.

Last night Quinn and I arrived at Caspar Cove just in time to watch the sun melt into the Pacific.

I’ve spent a lot of time up here over the years diving, working on the Caspar Cove Project, and helping our community restore these incredible underwater forests. But getting to share this place with Quinn makes it feel completely different.

Hopefully today I’ll get her out in the water with me so she can see the overabundant purple sea urchins up close, explore what’s happening beneath the surface, and understand a little more about why so many of us keep showing up to help bring the bull kelp back. 🌿🌊

As a Papa, I think a lot about what kind of world we’re leaving our kids. But moments like this also remind me that one of the greatest things we can give them is a relationship with the places we hope they’ll someday care for.

For now, though, I’m just grateful for a beautiful sunset, an adventure with my girl, and a little daddy–daughter time by the ocean.

Later today… we get wet. 🤿😂💙

I'm baaack!

After 10 wonderful days of camping, fishing, hiking, paddle boarding, mountain lakes, campfires, hot springs (Buckeye, Travertine, and Wild Willy's), family time with Stephanie and Quinn... and just the right amount of general shenanigans in the Eastern Sierra... I'm back! 💛

My heart is full, my nervous system is reset, and (despite my best efforts) I only caught enough fish to keep my ego humble (which was zero)

I'm back to teaching my regularly scheduled yoga classes for the next two weeks, and I'd love to see you on the mat.

Come stretch out those summer adventures (or your office chair posture 😉), breathe deeply, reconnect, and come get your yoga on!

I may even have a few Sierra stories... and, of course, some fresh dad jokes.

Can't wait to practice with you!
