Procreate Coffee NYC Barista classes for new business owners, baristas and coffee enthusiasts. Onsite training for local coffee businesses.

Procreate Coffee was founded in 2014 by Jessa Winn as an independent coffee education resource. Jessa recognized the need for simple, low cost classes for the many individuals that wanted to start their own coffee businesses but didn't know where to start. Classes were immediately successful and continue to be valued above competitors because our classes are not a sales pitch for our own coffee or products. Our only goal is to help you reach your goals! In 2017, Procreate Coffee was contracted by the NYC Department of Corrections to start a coffee school for inmates at Rikers Island. The barista program at Rikers teaches inmates useful skills and helps improve morale within the facilities among inmates and corrections officers alike. It was immediately popular and continues to make people happy 3 days a week in two separate facilities. We opened our current barista training studio in November of 2018. The studio is located just a few blocks north of Industry City in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. At Procreate Coffee, we offer a variety of practical and fun classes no matter your purpose for attending. It's not unusual to have a student opening a shop, another learning for home, one that aspires to work as barista and at least one that loves coffee and wants to learn something new for fun! And because our classes are small, we're able dedicate extra attention to students of all levels and interests, so you'll never have to worry if the class is too simple or advanced for your needs!

The body describes the weight and texture of coffee in your mouth — think of the difference between skim and whole milk.

🌿 Light body = delicate & tea-like
🥛 Medium body = smooth & balanced
🍫 Full body = rich & heavy

Body is just one characteristic that can help you understand and describe what you’re tasting in the cup.

Spooky season calls for coffee pairings with a little extra flavor. 👻☕️

🎃 Pumpkin Spice + Espresso: Warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg complement the rich, roasted notes of espresso.

🍫 Chocolate + Coffee: A classic combination that brings out the rich, bittersweet flavors in both.

🍁 Maple + Coffee: Sweet, warm maple adds a cozy fall twist without overpowering the coffee.

Whether you’re into pumpkin spice, chocolate, or maple, the right flavors can bring out the best in your cup. 🍂

Microfoam is the silky, velvety layer of finely textured milk created by properly steaming milk. Unlike large, airy bubbles, microfoam has tiny, evenly distributed bubbles that create a smooth texture and glossy finish, perfect for lattes and latte art. 🤎

Learning how to create consistent microfoam is one of the keys to better milk-based drinks and cleaner latte art.

MYTH: Pumpkin spice coffee gets its flavor from pumpkin.

FACT: The classic pumpkin spice flavor actually comes from a blend of warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. The “pumpkin” part is often more about the flavor profile and aroma than the pumpkin itself. 🎃

That’s what makes those cozy fall flavors pair so well with coffee. 🍁

Channeling happens when water finds uneven paths through the coffee puck during espresso extraction.

Instead of flowing evenly through the grounds, water takes the path of least resistance, which can lead to uneven extraction and unbalanced flavors. Proper distribution, tamping, and dialing in your espresso can help minimize channeling and create more consistent shots.

Dose refers to the amount of coffee grounds used to prepare an espresso shot.

A consistent dose is an important part of creating balanced espresso because even small changes can affect the strength, flavor, and extraction of your coffee. Baristas carefully measure their dose to maintain consistency and achieve the best results in every cup.

Dialing in is the process of adjusting your grinder and recipe to achieve the best possible espresso extraction.

Because coffee changes throughout the day due to factors like humidity, temperature, and bean age, dialing in is an ongoing part of a barista’s workflow.
