🏗️ CONSTRUCTION HISTORY | October 28, 1965
On this day in 1965, the final piece of the Gateway Arch was set into place in St. Louis, completing one of the most recognizable structures in the country.
Designed by architect Eero Saarinen and structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel, the Arch took an incredible team to turn that design into reality. Construction began in 1963 and involved hundreds of skilled workers, tradespeople, engineers and contractors.
The finished Arch stands 630 feet tall — and 630 feet wide. Its reinforced concrete foundations extend 60 feet underground, with 30 feet anchored into bedrock.
More than 60 years later, it’s still an impressive reminder that iconic structures start with a great design — but it takes skilled people to build them.
Details matter — especially when you're building something meant to last.
