Round pens and lunging are just training tools/steps in the training process. They aren't for taking the edge off of one or for exercising them.
I don't see a need to lunge a horse other than maybe in the beginning stages, just to work on control without being on them.
Every c**t I start begins with round pen work but it usually only takes a few minutes to get control of them and have them paying attention without wearing them out. Then I can build on everything else from there.
This c**t, once in the round pen, thought it was his job to just run. He was nervous and it took quite a bit of patience to get his mind in the right place. This is just a short video clip of what took several days and many laps around the pen to accomplish.
So just remember whatever you are doing with your horses whether you mean to or not, you are training them.
The end of the video makes it worth the time spent. So take the time it takes.
