Our annual goose hunt was a success again this year despite the 6" of blowing snow, cold and uncooperative geese. I got to spend time with Zach and Brian and was blessed with another band for my lanyard. We all got to bring some geese home and made more memories to relive around future campfires.

After a couple of years of trying to get his first whitetail buck, a quick trip for sanity reasons paid off Big for Justin. Big things come to those who wait. Congratulations.

A long time between updates but here are some of this years trail camera photos. The road up to the Buckhorn property has been damaged several times this year because of flash flooding but it is now passable with caution. There are many pieces of heavy equipment along the roadway and the gate at Pennock Pass is still closed due the the forest closure in the Pingree Park area. The area is very dry and Pendergrass creek is no longer flowing. Not much activity yet for the rut due to the heat. Muzzle loader hunters have taken one of 7 legal bulls spotted, but none have responded to calls. Cooler weather coming should bring on the rut and, hopefully, bring in more elk.

The trail cameras are down and had some surprises with all of the fire activity in the area. The animals moved ahead of the fire, but not miles ahead some times a few hundred yards. Our property did not burn, but you can see what did from ours. My neighbors were fortunate and had minimal damage to their cabins but no complete losses beyond our place. The elk, deer and moose stayed into December without pressure from hunters this year due to the National Forest lands being closed to access.

Though devastating to the landscape, fire is a helpful tool in forest management. The Cameron Peak Fire has changed the Buckhorn Creek area in such a way that my children might live long enough to see the climax forest come back. When it comes to the large animal species impacted by fire, very few animals are lost as a direct result of the flames. Had the fire consumed the wintering area for the elk and deer the losses to the populations would be staggering. The following video of the winter survey of the elk herd from the burn area shows how healthy our herd is. With average snow fall in the burn area and a wet spring and summer, the animals should have plenty of forage in the area of the burn to thrive. I am looking forward to another good year for hunting our Buckhorn Property

The Cameron Peak Fire burned 208,913 acres from Aug. to Dec. in Larimer County, but it does not appear that the fire is impacting elk herds.
