US on El Camino de Santiago Just a couple of Sr. Citizens on a Walk!

05/09/2026

OK!
Today is Saturday, September 5, and we are in Villafranca-Montes de Oca. It was a short hike day, and we arrived at our lodging before noon.
The past two days of walking were 17 miles and 14 miles. Both days in afternoon temps reaching about 100°F. Whew! Tough days.
Today when we arrived in Villafranca-Montes, and our luggage had not arrived ahead of us or with us or after us. We spent 4 hours frantically trying to locate and retrieve our "send ahead" bag. With the help of our lodging hostess, Christina, We were able to nail it down that it had never been picked up at our last place of lodging in Belarado.
We were finally able to get it delivered to us by taxi around 4 PM.
Stress definitely not avoided, but the in the end it all turned out OK.
Sat down to dinner, laughing with Jake and took a Whatsapp call with Heather.
Excellent supper, and came back to Hostel to a full, unadulterated send-forward bag. All is well.
God is good!!

Yesterday Hope and I visited the Monistary Church in Najera, El Monastery de Santa Maria la Real de Najera. Very rich history in the area.

Started our hike this morning at 7:15am after a slack resting day off yesterday. Got out about an hour and 45 minutes to a little town and stopped for a potty break and coffee. Discovered we couldn't find two credit cards and started to panic. Called for a taxi back to Najera where we had stayed. Searched our room again, searched our forwarding duffle bag, which had not been picked up from our hostel yet, asked the hostel clerk (the last time we remembered using the card last night)...nothing.
Jacob said Hope should completely empty her backpack so she did. The cards were there. They had been placed in the pack loose, and had worked their way down to the bottom of the bag.
We decided to just taxi it back forward on the trail to our destination of today - Santo Domingo. Chilling again this PM, after all the stress. 🤔🥴😵‍💫🙂🥾🥾

As of where we are today, we have ticked off just over 106 miles or 171 km. 👍🙂🥾🥾

Shoes on the right - I have worn 4 months B4 starting El Camino. Shoes on the left are new (but "broke in" at home for a few days prior to bringing them along). Retiring the old ones today, and will start out in the new one tomorrow morning, after a much needed rest day...for all of us today.

Long hike today- 17.4 miles. Yesterday was also 17+ miles.
Definitely a test of will. Near 90 degrees in the early afternoon. Not much shade. Lots of Vinyards.
Hope took a little tumble when a rock on the edge of the road rolled under her foot. We were walking along a gravel road between fields of rows and rows of grapevines grown for wine. I decided that the field owed us some compensation for tripping Hope, so I picked a very small cluster of 🍇 and sampled these ripe grapes. VERY GOOD! Refreshing after the tumble. It is prime ripening time here and harvesting has begun.
We've gone 88.8 miles so far in 8 days of walking. We layed out for an "off day" in Pamplona on our third day to rest and buy a duffle bag to pack up and send ahead each day to our next stop to lighten our walking load. That's been a great help. We way overpacked our backpacks!
We're laying out for another off day tomorrow in Najera. Small town, but cute and hopefully restfull. Jake's got some pretty gnarly blisters, Hope has a few small bruises and scrapes, and I am really sore from muscle exertion - back, legs, hips. Need a day of rest!
But, not to worry! We're A-A-L-L-R-I-G-H-T!!! God is good!
G'nite!

Today's walk was HOT. Finding out that there is SO much the movie ,"The Way" left out.
I thought that after The Pyrenees Mountains, it was. Pretty much rolling low lowlands...NOT! LOTS of up and down, just not as high as the Pyrenees. We've had some tough days with the heat, long segments (following designated routes per AllTrails app), and pretty rugged terrain.
Staying in Logroño tonight.
G'nite!!
