A lot of people ask me how I package or store our chickens after I process them. (Typically we do 30-50 a year).
We used to do whole birds in shrink bags and plainly put… it took up way to much room and was very impractical.
That said, I started parting them out and never looked back. Huge savings in space for about 2 extra minutes per bird. And way more functional for a family on the go!
Below are pics of the final product headed to the freezer. This year we made some tweaks and had an exceptional yield with an average of 9.45lb per chicken, with big bird going 11lbs!! We use 6x8 trays and a chamber sealer.
Tray break downs are as follows:
Legs - 4 per pack
Thighs - 4 per pack
Breasts - 2 per pack
Flats - 8 per pack
Drums - 8 per pack
Tenders - 6-8 per pack

This supplemented with all the hunting and fishing I do and I can tell you it has been years and years since we have purchased any meat at all from any stores. The only thing we spend money on is briskets for the smoker, and if we need a very specific steak(s) for an event. It doesnt happen all at once but if you add a little each year before you know it, like us, you will have a freezer for your birds, one for your cow, and one for pork and fish. 🎣 here if ya got any questions! Farm on! 🚜

Raising chicks in the winter isn’t always pretty… and today’s video shows the honest, harsh reality of what it really takes. We already lost a chick to the cold, and if you’re planning to raise birds through the colder months, this is the side you need to see. Between heat sources, bedding, brooder setups, electricity costs, and the time it takes to keep everyone warm and alive winter chicks aren’t for the faint of heart.

In this video, we break down what went wrong, what we’re changing, the gear we trust, and what new homesteaders should expect when starting chicks in freezing weather. If you're building a small homestead, raising Cornish Cross, or growing your family’s food supply, this one will help you avoid the most common and costly mistakes.

Stick with us as we show the true cost, the real emotions, and the critical lessons that come with micro-homesteading through winter. This is all part of our family's journey toward self-sustainability… one tough day at a time.
