Wrestling is a wonderful sport...and because it requires so much of a person the highs and lows are more pronounced. This becomes even more true as seasons begin to wind down. Individual tournaments begin after teams finish the dual season and one by one those individual seasons come to an end. Some lose in wrestle offs, others in regional, sectional, or state tournaments, but they all eventually come to a close.
Coaches will stand across the mats and cheer victory for their wrestler while another faces a season that has come to an end until eventually the coin flips and it is their own wrestlers who feel the sting of defeat. The initial sting hurts, but wrestlers should remember that they are defined by more than a hand raised.
The won when they committed to the sport and finished a season. They won when they worked hard on a practice mat. They won when they made weight. They won when they took the mat and stood face to face with an opponent in the center of a mat. The won when they persevered and experienced the hardest 6 minutes in sports.
Today every single team in Tennessee has wrapped up their seasons. Of all the wrestlers in the state a small handful reached a goal of being a state champion, but all who spent a season with teammates and coaches have victories to celebrate.
We will highlight each of our seniors who have put the capstone on their careers next week...but we are proud of all the wrestlers who put on a purple and gold singlet and represented Community Wrestling with the sportsmanship, respect, and dignity that the sport deserves.
