And just like that, it’s over. Here are a few thoughts I would like to share with parents regarding my club volleyball experience as a parent for my boys.
Lesson 1, It goes by a lot faster than you think, enjoy each moment, embrace it...the tears, the frustrations, and the joy...embrace it all.
Lesson 2, Stick with one club and I don't mean Dime, I mean just stick with one club. I have seen kids bounced around clubs and in the end, my boys had a great experience simply because they stuck with one group of boys and coaches. Chemistry is more important than you think.
Lesson 3, They see and feel everything you do. I learned this the hard way because I am a coach. My boys in the beginning were listening to me more than their coaches. Their teammates were listening to me more than the coach! What a horrible example to set as a coach myself! Toward the end, I learned to sit back and just be a Dad. If they missed a serve or a pass, I just clapped and tell them, "Next one!". The more I chilled, the more they smiled and laughed on the court.
Lesson 4, It's all in the fundamentals. Sean and Tyson are very technically grounded in all skills, not just one. Because of that, they were always on the court. Coaches cannot ignore a good passer and defender, they're the glue of a team. Don't ignore the fundamentals.
In summary, I just want to encourage you to enjoy the journey. Learn from my mistakes and embrace each moment. Trust me, you're not going to remember the scores or the games, you're going to remember the weirdest moments and they're few and far in between. As a coach, I know now what I need to do to improve Dime. I know what I have to do to make sure your kids are grounded in the basics so no matter where they go, they're going to be a valuable asset to that team!
