1 year ago I faced fears and took imperfect action to "open the doors" of my personal training business. So much has happened in that year and I've learned more than I ever thought possible. Turns out pursuing something you are passionate about can actually be fun.

Here are some highlights:

- 2 of my current clients have been with me since the start! And most others have been training for 6 months or more.

- I started online training too and really love that aspect of my work

- Central Rock Gym took me on as a trainer there and I get to teach a super fun "Weight Room Skills" class there as well.

- Most of my clients are trans and q***r which makes the whole endeavor that much more rewarding. Many of my clients have become friends as well and I really look forward to our time together (or the text conversations I have with my online clients).

- I'm actually starting to believe that I can be successful, that I'm making a difference, and that I can make this work long term.

Here's to year 2! Hit me up if you want in on the fun!

(The photo is from a silly video I made over the summer and I'm squatting June)

Kayla might be my most energetic client. This energy is accompanied by her playlist of the day, which often revolves around funk. Reps are always in-time.

The other day I told her we were going to switch from the kettlebell sumo deadlift we'd been doing to a barbell lift. Her face lit up. She loves it! Here she is on her first set with perfect form.

People work out for different reasons. Not everyone (most people?) aren't particularly excited to lift weights, but they do it because it feels good and is a path to their goals. It's an amazing feeling to find a lift or exercise that really clicks with someone, to know they are getting a little joy from a session, and that they are feeling like the badass self that they are.

Body Mass Index or BMI is a measurement of body weight/height that is widely used by medical and fitness professionals as a predictor of health. A brief look at the origins of BMI reveals a racist history and its generalized usage is highly suspect as an accurate measure of what it's supposed to predict. Instead it creates a weight stigma and fuels fat phobia, which can often result in a toxic environment in healthcare and fitness environments for fat individuals or anyone identified as overweight.

Fitness professionals who focus on helping clients develop a regular movement practice that focuses on adding strength, mobility, and joy in movement can empower clients to connect with their body instead of fixating on inaccurate measures of so-called health.

What does Cha Cha Cha music have to do with fitness?

Everything apparently.

My oldest client is 86. She was very active up until a couple years ago when she started having knee pain due to arthritis. Her daughter hired me to work with her to try to get her more active. Our sessions started off slow. We'd do most exercises on the couch because her knee hurt to stand. I quickly realized that I had to sit across from her and mirror exercises or else she'd lose focus and start doing something else. She likes it when I put a resistance band behind my back and tell her to try to pull me over. She winces as she rows as if she might. I bought her a 4lb medicine ball that she always says is reeeally heavy, even though she regularly lifts two 2lb weights. She grew up in Puerto Rico. She told me she loved dancing.

I tried to get her to do a bit more standing/walking exercises each time, but the idea of pain scared her and she didn't want to try most days. Then one day I put on some Cha Cha Cha music. She started dancing. Not just dancing, but DANCING! She's got moves!

Now we try to dance for about half of each session. She stops if she gets tired or if her knee starts to hurt. She's happy and engaged and I think she looks forward to me coming twice a week.

Fitness has never been the goal here. Movement and the joy and quality of life that it brings is the goal. Maybe fitness will happen, but that will just be a really nice bonus.

Happy Pride Everyone!

I figure it's about time that I get on the Instagram to maybe share some good information, or offer some inspiration, or at the very least to be present in this space, but I've been dreading it almost as much as June dreaded having to wear that rainbow sweat band for 30 seconds while I took this picture (she got lots of treats and pets before and after!). I don't think I'm alone in having a love hate relationship with social media But here I am! And hopefully I can spread more of the love around through this account.

When I started my At-home personal training business I first advertised through a local q***r facebook group hoping to gain a few clients. The response was overwhelming though! There is apparently a huge demand for q***r trainers. As I added more and more clients I started to realize the limitations of my at-home business model. I can only help a very limited number of people if I personally need to drive to meet every one of them at their house. While gaining lots of in-person experience training a diverse population, I started to learn more about how I can bring some of my business online. Stay tuned for more information, or get in touch to find out more!
