On Monday, April 15th, Kate Hughes stepped up to complete a birthday bear pit tradition. On the day, the fencer will hold the floor for the number of passes to their age. She first arrived at our club after winning a raffle for three months of classes back in November. Following the raffle win, her progress at the club has been astronomical, driven by her dedication to learning and embodying the spirit of Bologna. In a show of strength, she completed her 21 passes, then, to top it off, another 17 immediately after. Completing the passes is a show of commitment and endurance, culminating in your displaying your art for all to bear witness.

If you’re interested in fencing, anime, Game of Thrones, or even just swords, we hold classes on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30 to 9. We only have a few class slots open at this time, so if you’ve ever wanted to slay your own dragons, come on out!

False alarm on the bout night. The curriculum schedule was misread, so we'll be getting the pit in on Monday.

Just read an incredible piece on The Art of Arms about The Chivalric Academies of Bologna by Joshua Wiest — and I highly recommend giving it a look if you’re into Renaissance history, martial culture, or the idea of education in the age of the Renaissance.

The article dives deep into how, after the fall of the Bentivoglio Signoria in the early 1500s, Bologna became a crossroads of political turmoil and cultural reinvention. Amidst all that, a fascinating network of academies arose — not just philosophical or literary clubs, but institutions where noble youth learned fencing, horsemanship, rhetoric, dance, languages, mathematics, and the values of chivalry itself.

What struck me most was how these academies weren’t just about combat — they were total education centers, blending intellectual study with martial training, and shaping what people of that era thought of as a well-rounded nobleman. Some focused on public demonstrations of skill, others on rigorous training from as young as eight years old.

If you enjoy historical martial arts, or are curious about how Renaissance elites fused arms and letters into a coherent worldview, this piece is a rich and thought-provoking read.

Here's a thrilling snapshot from a sparring session at the Tulsa School of Arms! On the left, we've got Geoff channeling his inner samurai with some fierce Kenjitsu moves, while on the right, that's me (Rex) holding it down with Bolognese swordsmanship flair.

Sports like these might seem all about individual skill and focus, but they build bonds that go way beyond the mat. In team sports, camaraderie comes from shared victories and group strategies, but even in solo pursuits like fencing or martial arts, you forge lifelong friendships with your training partners. Sweating it out together, pushing each other's limits, and celebrating small wins create an unbreakable community. Geoff and I started as sparring buddies, and now we're like brothers in arms—proof that individual sports can spark connections that last a lifetime.
