You know.... I’ve been a Personal Trainer for about 11 years. In that decade of work...I would say that the old adage “No pain, no gain” took on many different interpretations.
However over the past couple years, surely over the past couple of weeks, I’ve learned that pain is misunderstood. Pain is a signal, it’s a teacher, it’s more good than it is bad.... It’s necessary
For the better part of my career I tried to help people “avoid” pain... You know?...”Squat this way and it won’t hurt” “If your shoulder hurts during bench pressing try it this way and it won’t hurt”.... And there is some context to that but life is complicated, and pain in this context can’t be reduced down to just “do it this way and you’ll never have pain”
Some times your shoulder/knee/back/etc just daggum hurts!....... So then what??
What you need to do is engage with the pain. Determine how much pain is TOO much before you need to make some kind of adjustment.
I’ll give you an example in my life.....
I freaking love coaching people... I’ve loved it every since I started in 2013....
And I couldn’t think of too many more painful realizations in my life, than the fact that it is indeed time for me to move on from the line of work that I love so much... And avoiding the pain of moving on was holding me back from the gratitude for the time put in as well as the potential gains that await in a new career.
This picture shows my last moments as personal trainer and gym manager at
It hurts. A lot. But I know now that this pain is the precursor to a gain. Because the counterpart to pain is gratitude..... Every time pain subsides, you’re left with gratitude, especially when you face it head on and make the necessary adjustments.
Avoidance doesn’t work y’all....Seek to understand, then adjust. It takes time, but you’ll become more resilient in the long run.
Freaking love y’all man
Freaking sad... And freaking nervous... Freaking painful.... But that's good.... Onward... Forward
I’m THOROUGHLY excited to begin my new career with and to contribute to the growth of such a fantastic company.
