What a difference a year can make! Last year we met this little one as she was just turning four! She loved getting in the pool with her brother, using floaties and pretending to be mermaids with her instructor; however really struggled with lessons that required acclimation and endurance. At her very last session last year - something switched. All lessons before, felt of little progress and defeat. At this particular lesson, we encouraged her to jump off the diving board and she did!!
This year, we encouraged high volume lessons, using an hour instead of 30-minutes and we have seen significant improvement. With just her second lesson this year, she is jumping off the board and clearing the entire pool!
Our two rules with teaching lessons are:
1. Never leave the pool side or wall when the instructors back is turned.
2. BE SO BRAVE - even when things feel uncomfortable.
This past weekend, she was so brave and we are so excited to see how these next two lessons follow!
Swim lessons are different for every child. Each participant brings their own fears and discomforts. Some participants catch on fast, and make our time a breeze. Others are about building a relationship and being intentional with each participants strong suits. Even though, our job is to build confidence and endurance in the water and hope each child we interact with will gain skills quickly, we appreciate the bond we get to have with our repeated lessons. Sometimes we get the opportunity to take away a funny quote said by one of our swimmers and apply it to our own life. Sometimes, we just reminisce on their quirky personalities and think of them from time to time. This particular child, is a personality we missed so deeply. We are so happy we get to see her this summer being so confident, so brave, and oh so funny!!
