Geology Hikes in Sabino Canyon National Recreation Area, Tucson, AZ On specific Tuesday and Thursday mornings enjoy a geology hike in Sabino Canyon. Sabino Canyon Rd., Tucson, Arizona. (8:30am - 11:30am).

Starting November 15, 2022, on Tuesdays, and starting December 8 on Thursday mornings, enjoy a walk and talk about the fascinating facts of geology in Sabino Canyon, Tucson, Arizona. Meet at 8:30 am in the courtyard of the Sabino Canyon Visitor's Center at 5700 N. The Tuesday Geology and Nature Walks (401) will be easy and no more than 1/2 mile (8:30 - 10:30am). The Thursday Geology and Nature Hik

es (402) will be moderately difficult and take about 3 miles, plus a mile back to the Visitor Center. Hike Director, Chuck Houy, a Sabino Canyon Naturalist, will be leading the hikes and at times sharing hike leadership with other team naturalists. His background includes knowledge of Sabino’s geology, geological history, and many plants and animals/critters of the Sabino Canyon National Recreation Area. He will explain many fun facts and is delighted to answer questions too! Note: The hikes are always outdoors.

We meet almost every Tuesday and Thursday at 8:30am in the Visitor’s Center Plaza, and go hiking for a few hours from there. You can stay or drop out anytime you wish. More info below.

ANNOUNCEMENT / SCHEDULE
GEOLOGY HIKE 2-WEEK SUSPENSION:
Our Geology Hikes in Sabino Canyon will be suspended for two weeks, from now, Jan. 21, until we resume again on February 8. Our hike leader, Chuck Houy, will be out of town.

We cordially invite you to join us again. Our educational and fun hikes are a fascinating way to see the canyon in a deeper way, understanding it’s beginnings and its speculated future. Rocks, earth, and sky! Stories and facts about the geology and natural resources impacting Sabino Canyon. Thanks to all the geology fans who joined Naturalist Chuck Houy this morning on our first of “Geology Hikes in Sabino Canyon” of the season. We had a diverse group of experienced geology hikers and also newbies. Fun was had by all as we managed to give geology history and current status of the Sabino Canyon earth beneath us.

Join us most Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30am through March 31, except for Thanksgiving this Thursday.

First hike of the season in the books! Thanks to all who came out and celebrated on our 2- hour hike with lead naturalist Charles Houy informing and entertaining geology fans in . Here’s a video of Chuck this morning in Sabino Canyon explaining the geological origins and happenings of the Catalinas and other mountains in a ring around Tucson, and how our desert valley floor was formed. Fascinating stuff! Plan to come on Tuesdays or Thursdays throughout the season for this free geology hike and lesson.
