You do this job because you love it. Sure, the hours are hard at times and we would all like a little bit more appreciation for our efforts, but we all do this because we love it. We all love watching the athlete's we get to work with find success, and especially when they have those "breakthrough" moments. Those times "make it all worth it." But as awesome as those moments are the worst part of the job can be even lower, and it is one we all experience. It’s that unforeseen situation is when an athlete gets injured. I would argue that this is the time that your athletes need you the most, therefor it’s the most important part of the job. It's also one where we seem to have the most conflict between ATC's, S and C's, and PT's. This is the exact reason we made the pivot with CVASPS and are brining you a new format. We need to find a way to bring the medical and performance staffs together to help build a stronger, simpler, more streamlined plan for how we return our athletes back from injury. To do this we need to bring all sides of the performance realm together, to sit at the table, learn together, share ideas, discuss solutions, collaborate on strategies, and grow together so that we can all be better for our athletes in the time that they need you the most.

First things first with this pivot. We needed to stay true to what's always drawn people to CVASPS. I need to bring in the best possible people to help drive these discussions and bring the latest means, methods, and systems to you and your staff for us to continue to push forward. Our 2024 presenter lineup and their presentation topics are:

Dr. Charlie Weingroff: How can you evaluate athletes daily, and longitudinally to help identify what means and methods are appropriate and where progressions, regressions, and lateralizations may be necessary.

Dr. Ernie Rimer: Where our metrics fit, and ways we can better be evaluating the data to help our athlete’s move from step to step in the return

Dr. Mike Davis: The line between collaboration and control in the situation can be a challenging one, until looking at why you are actually here and where, at some times, evidence and archetypes can be both help and hinder this.

Dr. Aaron Heishman: What is the latest research on the highest-level athletes in the world saying, and how can we interrupt some of these ideas to help our own athlete’s return better, faster, and safer.

Heather Mason: You are only as good as the group you have around you. How you are identifying who you hire and what those that are hiring are looking for along with ways to incentive growth and development for your staff so they continue to improve for your athletes is vital to keeping your staff together so they can grow with the athletes.

Cam Josse: Game speed, the final step in connecting the athlete from rehab to performance

With the ultimate goal of the event being to bring together strength coaches and sports medicine practitioners to grow, build common language, evaluate and evolve their systems and processes I feel these 6 individuals and their topics are as perfect cornerstone to build upon and reach what you and your staff are hoping to accomplish, to be the best possible practitioners when your athlete’s need you the most. Tie in “the 200-person round table and BBQ” to this collaboration and I really think we have put together the staff development opportunity of the summer. Just like all things CVASPS though, I had to make it affordable. While some are charging 500 bucks a head for their events, I wanted to make sure that we kept it affordable, so we are priced over 40% below that, and have an even more affordable rate for your GA’s and interns. The catch? There are only 60 seats available, so you’ve got to act soon because this is sure to fill up.

I’m really excited about this July’s event and hope you and your staff are able to join us in Richmond, VA July 20/21 back on campus at The University of Richmond, for The Seminar. Use the link below for all the info and to book your seats today, but don't wait too long, because as I said earlier, seating is limited and I am certain we going to fill up:

06/13/2024

A phone call from a former athlete yesterday really hit home why we owe it to our athletes to be prepared for the worst case scenario. It was 3:30 PM yesterday. I had just walked in the door from an "off day" on our "off week" during the off season (please insert as many LOL's as possible in that sentence) and I got a FaceTime call from a former player, "JD, you got a minute, we need to talk." My heart just sunk in my chest, I was gutted already because I knew that this wasn't good. "I blew my patella tendon at a pre-draft workout". I was absolutely heart broken for the guy who has spent his whole life trying to do the right thing to get to this moment. I took a deep breath and said, "ok man, what's the next step and how can I help?"

Do you want to know why CVASPS took a pivot and made Return To Play the focus for the event? Phone calls just like the one I had yesterday. The moments where your athletes need you the most. So my question to you is, are you and your support staff prepared? Are you and your staff well equipped for the curveballs, progressions, regressions, and lateralizations that are required to navigate the terrain of a catastrophic injury. And if you are, are you going to be the first group of people that a past player calls, even if you haven't been their most recent stop?

This pivot occurred to help you and your staff be able to confidently say, yes. We can argue about roles and responsibilities, the value of Olympic Lifting, and if you should sprint short to long or long to short, but when our athletes TRULY need us is when their world falls apart. That's why this pivot happened, and why this will stay the focus of The Seminar for years to come. I really hope to see you and your staff in Richmond, VA July 20-21 as we return back on campus, where The Seminar belongs, at The University of Richmond. This past year I decided to make a small pivot with what we are doing with The Seminar. For the past 10 years it has been simply about any and all things performance, and while that has been sensational and brought some of the best minds in the world together to share, collaborate, and grow, I felt like we needed a bit more. I wasn’t sure what “more” was needed to start though, until I was talking with some of our Sports Med staff about an athlete who had been experiencing some unique “issues” in their recovery. Listening to the different language then what we would use in the weight room, and looking at some progressions that strength coaches would look at from a different lens it hit me. The worst part of the job, when the unforeseen situation of an athlete getting injured, is arguably the most important, and we need to find a way to bring the medical and performance staffs together to help build a stronger, simpler, more streamlined plan for how we return our athletes back from injury. This is why we build this July’s edition of The Seminar the way we did, to bring both sides of the performance realm together, to sit at the table, learn together, share ideas, discuss solutions, collaborate on strategies, and grow together so that we can all be better for our athletes in the one situation they need us the most.

As always with CVASPS, the first thing that I felt I needed to do was bring in the best possible people to help drive these discussions and bring the latest means and methods to you here in RVA. That’s why we have:

Cam Josse: Game speed, the final step in connecting the athlete from rehab to performance

With the ultimate goal of the event to bring together strength coaches and sports medicine practitioners to grow, build common language, evaluate and evolve their systems and processes I feel these 6 induvial and their topics are as perfect of a fit as could be for what we are hoping to accomplish. Tie in “the 200-person round table and BBQ” to this collaboration and I really think we have put together the staff development opportunity of the summer. Just like all things CVASPS though, I had to make it affordable. While some are charging 500 bucks a head, I wanted to make sure that we kept it affordable, so we are priced 40% below that. “It's like a 200-person round table and barbecue!”

Coach Bob Alejo said it best- what we pride ourselves on at Central Virginia Sports Performance Seminar is the fact that we're able to bring world class speakers and coaches from all over the world, to present in a fun, open environment to learn, collaborate and enjoy some of the country's best craft beer and BBQ. And this is just the breaks and cookouts outside of the presentations.

For this year's seminar- on July 15th and 16th- we are delighted to announce, perhaps our best ever line up of speakers. These individuals bring expertise from every area of our field in a variety of Olympic and team sports. There is truly something for everyone:

Al Vermeill
Mike Guadangoo
Zach Dechant
Ali Kershner
Jonas Dodoo
Adam Petway

Once we're done with the formal learning, it's time for our legendary cookout, which has become an event in itself, with coaches from around the world sharing stories and bouncing ideas back and forth with some of the best practitioners in the world. This is really what we feel makes us unique here at CVASPS: to provide a relaxed space where coaches can share and learn, push the profession forwards and help one another to grow professionally. As founder of CVASPS, I am immensely proud of this and I hope you get to experience it for yourself.

If you want to spend a fortune on tickets, flights and accommodation to sit in a vast auditorium at one of the “big” conferences, that's your prerogative. But instead, I hope you'll decide to come join us on July 15th and 16th at CVASPS, where you can rub elbows with the best in the business and experience the kind of learning and connections that will serve you and your athletes for years to come.... and don't forget the BBQ.

If you'd like to book your spot while we still have them available, click the banner below. If you are booking for multiple members of staff, please contact me personally for group discount rates.

See you at The Seminar,

JD

“None of this strength and conditioning s**t matters if we can’t get our athletes to understand what we’re asking them to do, or if they don’t understand how it applies. If they don’t get it, it doesn’t matter.”

Welcome back to The Podcast. If I was going to bring this thing back it had to be Jeff Moyer batting leadoff. In this 40-minute talk, Jeff and I talk about:

1) The new and unique rabbit holes that the pandemic has allowed Jeff to dive down
2) What were the driving factors behind him digging deep into neurology, and what this research has impacted in his evaluations and programming?
3) How his personal experiences growing up have been a guiding light in pushing him to find better answers.
4) How “comfort zones” don’t’ just limit athlete’s, but coaches as well.
5) The importance of a mentor, and why young coaches need to reach out to people as early as possible to learn from them
6) The importance of his presentation being applicable the Monday after The Pittsburgh Seminar and what to expect from his presentation.
