34 years later, the student became the teacher. ❤️

When Jay was first introduced to skiing, it was his mom who clicked him into his skis and sparked a passion that would last a lifetime.

This season at Mammoth Mountain, Jay had the chance to return the favor.

After decades away from the sport due to health challenges, his mom made her way back onto the snow. Standing beside her as an instructor wasn't just another lesson for Jay—it became the highlight of his entire season.

Moments like these remind us that teaching isn't only about developing skills. It's about building confidence, creating opportunities, and helping people reconnect with the activities they love.

As Jay puts it:

"Increase accessibility for all, no matter the age, physical ability, or wealth. Help people overcome their fears and discover the magic of skiing."

Thank you, Jay, for sharing this special full-circle moment with us.

What snow sports moment has stayed with you through the years?

Describe a student or moment where you saw the direct impact of your training as a PSIA-AASI instructor ->
For Victor Ybiernas, it was a phone call.
Years after helping a fellow supervisor achieve his Alpine Level II certification, Victor watched him continue to grow—earning Alpine Level III and eventually becoming an Alpine Examiner.
Then one day, he received a call thanking him for the role he played in that journey.
Moments like these remind us that teaching goes far beyond technical skills. The impact of an instructor can shape confidence, careers, and future leaders in our profession.

When your community doesn't stop at the mountain. 🏔️
One of our Western members just carried our banner all the way to Mt. Everest Base Camp: 5,364 meters (17,598 ft) . That's the spirit of people who are drawn to mountains in every form.
This is the Western community. We're everywhere the mountains take you.

Western By The Numbers.
3,716 members in 2023/24 — the highest total in the region's history.
Through pandemic recovery, record snowfall seasons, and challenging years alike, Western has not just survived. It has grown. That kind of sustained membership doesn't happen by accident — it reflects an organization that delivers real value to the people on the mountain every day.
2,094 event registrations in 2020/21.
3,341 in 2025/26.
That's not just more members showing up — that's a 60% increase in participation over five seasons.
More instructors investing in their development.
More clinics filled.
More community built on and off the mountain.

Western By The Numbers.
In 2021, 967 Western members were inactive. Today, that number is 440 — cut by more than half.
At the same time, the share of members participating in at least one regional event rose from 40% to 48%. More instructors engaging. Fewer sitting on the sidelines. That's not a coincidence — it's the result of a calendar built around real member needs.

Four seasons ago, Western offered 197 regional events. This season? 347.
That's not just growth. That's the region expanding what's possible for every member, in every discipline, across every corner of the West.
More events. More access. More reasons to stay engaged.
—Why this matters ?
These numbers tell a clear story: the region is not standing still. More information on our Truth + Momentum web page https://psia-w.org/truth-and-momentum/

Western By The Numbers.

Western members give PSIA-AASI a mean satisfaction score of 8.62 out of 10 — and 38% give a perfect 10.
That's not a stat. That's 3,700+ instructors saying: this community is worth it.
And 91% plan to renew.
The retention speaks for itself.

How cool is this? Our PSIA-AASI Western Region banner made it halfway to Everest Base Camp, carried by Dorjee Sherpa and her daughter Sabrina.

Behind, is the statue of her great uncle Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, who summited Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953 🤩🙌

The mountains may look different around the world, but the spirit is the same: adventure, connection, learning, and showing up for the journey.

Thanks for taking Western Region along for the ride.
