Description:
The Memorial is an annual competition dedicated to the memory of the Beaches founder, Alex A Jeffrey. Alex was a coach and mentor to many fencers and someone who strove to have women's sabre recognized as a legitimate weapon back when the world thought women should stick to foil and epee. He was the Canadian National coach for Women's Sabre and coached many NCAA, National and International fencers. In honor of Alex's contributions to the sport and his many eccentricities the Memorial takes the opportunity to remember him with many personal "awards" that reflect his interests and attitudes as well as holding a traditional tournament that gives out a trophy and medals and other prizes.
The tournament will hold an open event that is open to anyone ages 6 and older and any skill level. First round will be a pool and second round a direct elimination table Once the younger fencers are out of the open competition there will be a second table for ages 11 and under. Any fencer who is 11 or under at the time of the competition is eligible and seeding will be based on pool results from the open competition.
$10 from every entry will be put aside and divided up. $5 will be used as a prize for the winner of the competition and the other $5 will be put into a draw. If the winner is a youth or NCAA eligible fencer the prize money will be awarded as a gift certificate which can be redeemed for any club activity/equipment purchase. Others will have it awarded in cash. After the competition has concluded the draw will take place and cash awarded to whoever has the winning ticket. Additional tickets for this draw can be purchased for $1 each ticket. You will need to be present to receive the award and the winner of the Open is not eligible to win.
Registration:
You can register for this competition on the booking site: bscny.simplybook.me Membership is not required to register. Anyone 11 or under is automatically registered for the youth event when registering for the Open.
Covid Procedure:
Temperatures will still be taken at the door. Since our space is small we will be going by stricter procedures if there are more than 15 participants. In that case everyone regardless of vaccination status will need to wear their mask when not fencing. Fencers on strip can choose to drop their face mask but need to put it back on when finished.
If you have any questions or issues registering please let me know.
Hope to see you all out to celebrate the memory of our founding coach!
