This one left for New Jersey today. The new 154CM did ok, I still prefer ATS34. Sambar stag scales and a flap sheath. It looks splotchy in the pics but it’s color is much more even in person.

Years ago when I made my first knife I showed it to a gentleman who I thought the world of, Rodney Shelton. Mr. Shelton was one of the two knifemakers I learned from. I also learned a lot about life from him. Anyway, I handed him the knife and he gave it good look and then said “Who made it?” I told him, “I did” and he replied “Well, how am I supposed to know that?” By now I’m halfway between aggravated and confused so I said “Because I said so.” He smiled and said “Always put your name on your work.” I miss you, Mr. Shelton.

You’re right. I don’t do a good job wrapping presents. These 6 blades are rough ground and sealed in stainless steel pouches ready for heat treat.

This one almost got the best of me. It’s been a long time since I did bolsters but they turned out nice. The Cocobolo has a slight “Coke bottle” shape and she sharpened up quickly.

Finished up this little “bird & trout” knife today. It’s mirror polished stainless steel with mammoth ivory and it can be yours! Blade is 3-3/4” long and OAL is 7”

In all the years I’ve made knives this is the second time I’ve had to post this. I’m going to have to raise prices a bit. I ordered 7 sticks of 154CM this week and had sticker shock at how much blade steel has gone up. If we’ve talked and I have given you a price I’ll hold that. I have a about 15” of 1/8” thick left but anything from what’s coming will be adjusted.

Did some grinding today. These were already heat treated so I ran them through a series of finer grade belts. They are at 15 microns. Made the bolsters for the larger blade as well. All ready for final polish.

Several years ago I made a replica of a Bowie knife that was recovered from the Modern Greece, a blockade runner that sank off Kure Beach close to Fort Fisher. It’s the main pic for this page. At the same time I started a second blade and after it was heat treated it got pushed to the back of the line. Over the years I made the guard & butt cap and found an appropriate piece of sambar stag for the handle. I finally got around to turning the ferrule a couple weeks ago and this past Saturday I finally put it all together. So here is the second Modern Greece replica Bowie. It’s a little better made than the originals were with a through tang and threaded & peened on butt cap. Also it’s all stainless while the originals were carbon steel blades with brass guards and butt caps. I’d like to think it would have served one of our boys in gray well.

Refurbs are as much fun as finishing a new knife. I wish I had taken a pic or two of this vintage Case before I gave it a little TLC. It was rusty & pitted, the stag was dried out & chalky and someone had “sharpened” it on a hard rock leaving heavy grind marks along the blade. The knife looked as bad as the original sheath. The intent was not to make it look new but to bring it back to a condition that retains character but still looks nice. I gave it some bench time and made a new sheath with a nod to the original; it came out looking a lot better. I’d carry it.
