πŸŒžπŸŽ£πŸ¦‡ Memorial Day Weekend was a blast at Trinidad Lake State Park! 🏞️

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a fun and safe holiday weekend. We enjoyed two bat programs, where visitors learned about these fascinating nighttime flyers. πŸ¦‡πŸŒœ

Our young anglers learned how to set a hook, safely handle a fish, and spent some time watching bobbers in hopes of landing the big one. 🎣🐟

We wrapped up the weekend with a beautiful hike through Longs Canyon on Monday morning, exploring the area's unique history, geology, and wildlife. πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈπŸŒΏβ›°οΈ

Bird and Wildlife Sightings Through May! πŸͺΊ

We kicked off May with a birding adventure in Riley Canyon, where birders Ira and Tammy Sanders documented an impressive 26 bird species in just over an hour! Their enthusiasm for birding is contagious, and they have graciously offered to help with future birding outings, so keep an eye out for upcoming park programs.

πŸ¦† Trinidad Lake State Park provides an important resting place for migratory birds, making it a fantastic destination for birdwatchers of all experience levels. Throughout the month, visitors also helped update the Wildlife Sightings Board in the Visitor Center with birds and other wildlife observed around the park.

Whether you're new to birding or a seasoned observer, we invite you to help us keep our Birds of Trinidad Lake pamphlet up to date by sharing your sightings. Every observation helps us better understand and celebrate the incredible diversity of wildlife that calls Trinidad Lake home.

Stop by the Visitor Center to view the Wildlife Sightings Board, add your observations, and see what others have discovered!

🐞πŸͺ³ What makes a true bug a true bug? πŸͺ³πŸž

A prominent, triangle-shaped scutellum is one feature that helps identify a true bug. Many true bugs, such as boxelder bugs, also use a specialized needle-like mouthpart called a proboscis (or stylet) to pierce and feed.

πŸ€” Fun fact: Cockroaches spend a surprising amount of time grooming themselves, yet they still manage to walk through some pretty dirty places!

These were just a few of the fascinating facts shared during tonight's bug presentation by Professor Cliff Wiening of the Biology Department at Trinidad State College.

πŸ¦—πŸ” Thank you to everyone who joined us to learn more about the incredible world of insects!
