老子曾任东周的守藏史藏書室官員，长寿，如果他不是当时最有知识与智慧的人，也一定是最有智慧者一。汉代历史学家司马迁在《史记·老庄申韩列传》中写道:“盖老子百有六十余岁，或言二百余岁，以其修道而养寿也。”在古代，无论是皇家贵族还是普通百姓，都是从“修道而养寿”而开始的，老子也是“修道而养寿”，而且很有成效。

道德经的内容非常丰富，含有智慧，有启示，但老子著作的重点还是在于讲道。正如老子在【第二十五章】所说，“有物混成，先天地生。寂兮寥兮，独立不改，周行而不殆，可以为天下母。吾不知其名，字之曰道，强为之名曰大。大曰逝，逝曰远，远曰反。故道大，天大，地大，王亦大。域中有四大，而王居其一焉。人法地，地法天，天法道，道法自然。”老子的“道”，是先于天地、独立周行的宇宙规律，是不以人的意志为转移的。

当年，孔子见老子归而谓弟子曰：“鸟，吾知其能飞；鱼，吾知其能游；兽，吾知其能走。走者可以为网，游者可以为纶，飞者可以为矰，至于龙，吾不能知，其乘风云而上天。吾今日见老子，其犹龙邪！”（孔子回来对弟子说:“鸟，我知道它们善飞；鱼，我知道它们善游；兽，我知道它们善奔走。对于善奔走的野兽，可以用网缚捉；对于善游的鱼，可以用钩去钓取；对于善飞的鸟，可以用箭射获。至于龙，我不知道它是怎样上九天的。老子所讲的道，就像是龙，合起来成一体，散开来成云彩，乘驾云气而翱翔于阴阳之间。）（《史记老子列传》）换句话说，老子试图讲解出来的是关于神的，是读懂龙的人才可以完全理解的。正如老子在【第四章】所说“道冲而用之或不盈，渊兮似万物之宗。”“吾不知谁之子，象帝之先。”孔子、庄子评老子时都称其“神人”。

刘向《列仙传》:"老子西游，关令尹喜望见有紫气浮关，而老子果乘青牛而过也。"。面对虔诚的尹喜，老子留下了这部“道德经”，是写出来给人读的，好像是苦口婆心教导人类，给出了一条条得道的道理。但老子在【第八十一章】也说，“信言不美，美言不信。”在【第四十一章】 老子还说，“上士闻道，勤而行之；中士闻道，若存若亡；下士闻道，大笑之，不笑不足以为道。”老子也知道，不同人会从“道德经”读出不同的体会、知识及智慧。

刘向《列仙传》: (见尹喜之后)，老子著 道德经，出关，《史记》 “莫知其所终”。不知当时老子的想法如何，但他留下道德经之后，离开了中华大地，人类莫知其所终。
