At 44 years old, as a trainer, coach, gym owner, and someone who wants to stay strong for the long haul, I can tell you this:
Building muscle after 40 isn’t impossible. But we DO have to train differently than we did in our 20s.
We can’t train like we’re 22 and expect our 44-year-old bodies to recover the same way. 😅
Here are 4 things I believe matter MORE than ever after 40:
1. Train hard. Recover harder.
Sleep. Protein. Hydration. Walking. Mobility. Stress management. REST.
You don’t always need another crazy workout or MORE exercise. Sometimes your body needs you to actually recover from the work you’re already putting in.
2. Build muscle—not just burn calories.
This one is HUGE.
Stop measuring every workout by how many calories you burned or how sweaty you got.
Start paying attention to strength, quality reps, and progressive overload.
Muscle matters as we age. It supports our metabolism, our bones, our balance, our independence, and our ability to keep doing the things we LOVE.
3. Train SMARTER.
You don’t get bonus points for exercises that destroy your joints or leave you unable to move for three days.
Squats. Deadlifts. Presses. Rows. Push-ups. Carries. Sled work. Single-leg strength.
Basic movements WORK.
Choose exercises that challenge you, build strength, and allow you to come back and do it again.
4. Leave your ego at the door.
We are not training to impress anyone.
We're training so we can be strong at 44, 54, 64, 74 and beyond. 💪
We want to move well. Feel good. Stay active. Lift heavy things. And keep doing the things we love for as long as possible.
The goal isn’t to completely destroy yourself during every workout.
The goal is to build a body that keeps showing up for you.
Consistency wins. Strength matters. And it is NEVER too late to start. 💚
