Tritons Rowing Earn Two Top-Ten National Finishes After Two Weeks Off the Water
Tritons Rowing athletes arrived at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America National Championship Regatta in Oak Ridge, Tennessee this past weekend not just to compete — but to prove something. After a season defined by obstacles, they delivered two top-ten finishes on one of the biggest stages in youth rowing.
The Tritons earned their spot at Nationals the hard way, qualifying through the highly competitive Midwest Regional Championship earlier this month. Earning a national bid is no small feat: 50 to 60 of the best teams and more than 2,000 athletes from each region converge at one of nine qualifying regattas across the country, and only the top two crews in each event advance to the national stage. Simply qualifying means finishing among the top 18 crews in the nation.
Getting there, however, wasn't straightforward. A colder-than-normal spring brought heavy rain, extreme flooding, and high winds throughout the season. Then, in the two weeks immediately before Nationals, a combination of high winds and road construction at Medalie Park kept the team entirely off the water. Their first strokes on any water were on the race course itself, during a critical practice session the day before competition began.
The Women's Junior Double of Sylvia Coulter and Audrina Conrad, both from Traverse City Central, fought stroke for stroke through the rain across the full 1,500-meter course, finishing 7th in the country. They crossed the line just 0.2 seconds behind Conestoga Crew of Pennsylvania in a race that went to official video review.
The Men's Senior Double of Spencer Payne and Theo Jocks, also from Traverse City Central, navigated heavier rain, a difficult start, and an exceptionally fast field to finish 10th nationally — just 0.07 seconds behind NSU University School of Florida in another photo finish.
"Rowing is a sport defined by tenths of a second," Coach Chris noted. "Both of our events — and many across the weekend — came down to photo finishes requiring official video review. You expect racing to be close at Nationals, and this year did not disappoint."
