My hunter made 2 shots this morning. The first shot, after no reaction upon impact, with no blood or hair found within a 100 yard survey of both the field and woods was assumed to be a clean miss.
The second deer shot fortunately had a more promising blood trail. Spanning several hundred yards with no beds anywhere in the first 700 plus yards. However, after the blood started to turn to droplets and fade he decided to back out, make the ethical call and bring in a dog. Which I highly commend him for. Very rarely do I have a customer, that once they hear the price is the same regardless of gender, follows through with the search. Sad but true.
Upon my arrival at the point of impact Maggie wanted to take a trail that was 20 yards off the known blood trail. I asked the shooter if the deer he “missed” took this route? He confirmed. Staying on track, we continued to locate the confirmed hit deer 1,300 yards later. On our way out I wanted to see if Maggie would light up again near the missed does trail. Her reaction from earlier suggested it was at the very least wounded. As suspected she instantly took to the trail. We let her work and in less than 300 yards she recovered the “missed” doe.
Nolan Lee congrats on doubling down on your doe tags on the last day of gun season! And once again thank you Mags for proving time and time again that your nose, knows.
