A lot happens behind the scenes before a horseback ride ever heads down the trail at Cades Cove Riding Stables.

While our guests are getting ready and meeting their horses, our crew is already hard at work. Horses have to be cared for, saddled, checked, matched with riders, and lined up for each trip. Tack needs attention, equipment needs maintenance, and there is always another little job waiting around the barn.

Then comes one of the best parts watching a new group of riders get acquainted with their horses before heading out to experience Cades Cove from the saddle.

Some of these moments may not be the ones everyone thinks about when they picture horseback riding in the Smokies, but they are a big part of every ride we send out. It takes good horses and a hardworking crew to keep everything moving day after day.

There’s nothing quite like a day at Cades Cove Riding Stables.

From the moment our guests meet their horses to the moment they return from the trail, our crew works to make every ride a memorable part of their visit to the Great Smoky Mountains. For some guests, it’s their very first time on a horse. For others, horseback riding is a tradition they look forward to every time they come back to the Smokies.

And while our guests are getting ready, our horses seem to know exactly what’s happening. Some patiently wait their turn, some keep a close eye on everything going on around them, and a few are always ready to pose for the camera.

There’s a lot more that goes into a day at Cades Cove Riding Stables than just saddling horses and heading down the trail.

Between rides, our crew is constantly working behind the scenes to keep everything ready for the next group. Horses are cared for, equipment is checked, guests are helped on and off their horses, and yes… the loading area has to be cleaned up too. When you have a barn full of horses, somebody has to grab the rake and wheelbarrow!

It may not be the glamorous side of horseback riding, but it’s an important part of keeping our stables clean, safe, and ready for everyone who comes to experience Cades Cove from horseback.

We appreciate the hardworking crew members who take care of the big jobs, the little jobs, and everything in between. Their work starts long before many of our guests arrive and continues throughout the day.

Some of the best moments at Cades Cove Riding Stables happen before the trail ride even begins.

There’s something exciting about seeing the horses lined up, meeting the horse that will be your partner for the ride, getting settled into the saddle, and waiting for your group to head out into the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains.

There’s something special about the Smoky Mountains when the sun starts to disappear.

The bright colors of sunset slowly fade behind the mountains, the first stars begin to appear, and a little crescent moon hangs overhead. Even the drive through the Smokies becomes part of the experience.

Days around Cades Cove may be filled with horses, trails, wildlife, and visitors, but evenings like this remind us just how beautiful this place is from beginning to end.

Sometimes you just have to get away from the barn for a few minutes and enjoy one of the best parts of working in Cades Cove.

A quiet mountain stream, cool water, big rocks, and the peaceful sounds of the Great Smoky Mountains make a pretty good place to spend a little downtime. Our crew works hard taking care of the horses, helping our guests, and keeping everything moving throughout the day, so moments like these are always appreciated.

It’s easy to see why so many people fall in love with Cades Cove. Sometimes the best moments are the simple ones finding a quiet spot, sitting beside the creek, and enjoying the mountains around you.

There are some things we receive at Cades Cove Riding Stables that mean more than people probably realize.

Over the years, guests have left us drawings of their favorite horses, handwritten notes about their adventures, pictures from their rides, and little pieces of artwork created especially for our crew. We love them so much that many of them end up displayed right here at the stables.

These photos show just a few of those special memories. From young artists proudly sharing their horse drawings to families writing about the adventures they had on the trail, every one of these reminds us that a horseback ride through Cades Cove can become a memory that lasts long after the ride is over.

To everyone who has ever drawn us a picture, written us a note, mailed us a photo, or simply stopped by to tell us how much you enjoyed your visit thank you. Our guests are a huge part of what makes this place so special.
