It's a New Year and I am counting down to the start of North Carolina's dive season! In the meanwhile, a trip to Georgia Aquarium will help me wait for warmer weather.

This trip includes 2 night lodging at the Hilton Atlanta, entry to the aquarium and a concierge diving experience of the Ocean Voyager exhibit, home to whale sharks, manta rays and more! There are a limited number of dive spots available. Interested, but your buddy isn't? No worries! We also have special pricing for aquarium admission and other unique encounters.

With the first push of cold air into the region, it is time to hang up the fins for a few months. I didn't post much this season, so here we go with a recap....

I have been a scuba instructor since 2017, but this season marked FIVE YEARS of exclusively training PADI courses and FOUR YEARS since the launch of Makai Scuba NC.

As an independent instructor, I rely on word of mouth and returning divers. Makai Scuba NC is my passion project, my side business (I also work full time in healthcare). My drive extends beyond my love of the underwater environment. It is watching a new diver conquer a skill, watching the confidence build as returning divers continue their education and hearing updates from individuals I have had the privilege to dive with.

So with that, I say THANK YOU to all the divers I encountered this season. You made 2025 a banner season for this small business!

Attention All Small Business Owners!
March is on our doorstep and with it warmer weather. Soon our coastal towns will swell with visitors. Ask yourself: Are your employees ready? Do they have the skills necessary to aid a person in distress?

I offer on-site Basic Life Support (CPR) and First Aid Training for anyone with little or no medical training. Let me help you prepare for an emergency in any setting. Send a DM to learn more!

All - it has been almost 10 weeks since the floods of ravaged countless communities in . The days have been long, with the road to recovery longer. This I am highlighting two small organizations dedicated to making that road a little easier.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

is a SMALL BUT MIGHTY non-profit dedicated to restoring private, residential access in Ashe County. While limited funding is available for private roads, bridges and culverts, it is not enough to touch the overwhelming need. This grassroots organization is 100% fueled by volunteers and to-date have restored access for over 50 residences!!

Based in Haywood County, is providing food access and essential supplies for rural communities most affected by the isolation wrought by Helene. In November they distributed nearly 58,000 pounds of food through their , supplied over 300 heaters to facilities and provided 65 families with heat.

Its been a fantastic dive season! ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​As an instructor, I choose to wear the same exposure gear as those I am diving with. Because of this, I dive in NC April through late October/early November.

This season, I introduced seven individuals to the world of diving! Plus there were the usual courses and we have a few individuals reserving their spaces for 2025!

Makai Scuba NC specializes in small groups - be it families or one-on-one - and provides pay as you go options. If customized, flexible scuba instruction is what you are looking for, then we are here for you!!

ALL !!! This one hits close to the heart.... 💔 ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​We have all seen the images. The devastation of Western NC following the torrential rains from Hurricane Helene is just beginning to be assessed. Most counties are completely inaccessible and cut off from the outside world.

A member of the , , lives in Asheville. It was a torturous wait amid the cellular/wifi blackouts but we finally heard she and her family were safe. But so many others within NC's mountain communities have lost everything. The road to recovery will be a long one.
