October is domestic Violence Month and I feel it is important to share my story in hopes that other women find their voice as well.

10 years ago, I was doing my best as a single mom for my boys to cope with the trauma we all experienced.

My ex-husband was an alcoholic and things at home became so bad- toxic, explosive, unpredictable, emotionally abusive. I recall laying in bed with Ronan, who was 6, thinking how can this be our life. How can I continue to live like this? My boys and I deserve better. Alcoholism is a horrible addiction for all involved- but when coupled with daily worries of just keeping things status quo. Focusing on my boys and finding new ways of providing for them.

After 18 years of living this life that got so out of control, I had enough. There were a few significant events that transpired that led me to my breaking point. That moment of taking my power back and no longer tolerating this life. This led us to leaving our home.

I could no longer allow myself or my kids to be in such an unhealthy environment. That next year was one of the most challenging times in my life. Looking back, I don’t know how I got through it.

I found Catholic Charities and joined their program for women who experienced domestic violence. Both my boys also participated in their kids program. There father spiraled and basically abandoned them for almost two years. Al- anon was helpful for me, therapy, family and friends love and support was key to healing.

What I experienced during that time was that I chose forgiveness. I focused so much on my mindset of letting go, taking one day at a time, my own self- care, my boys well- being. I did what was necessary to provide as now a single mom completely started over.

I share this because I know there are so many women who stay, those who believe it is their fault. Those who are codependent and people pleasers that they do whatever they can to keep things neutral. For me, no one knew how bad it was. No one knew what I dealt with everyday because I just did. I lived in survival mode for most of my adult life. I made excuses, I changed my behavior to suit his problems. I tried to save him.

You can’t save anyone but yourself. You can choose yourself and your children. You are worthy of a life filled with peace, love, and happiness. No matter what was happening I never gave up. I knew we would be OK even when I couldn’t understand why we had to go through it this way.

I remember thinking I would never feel better, I wouldn’t ever be able to heal and the guilt. Oh my, the guilt I felt for what my children experienced. Their path in life and the trauma they witnessed. We did get through it, we did find peace and happiness. We now live in balance. No more fight or flight and highs and lows based upon the day.

Catholic Charities gave us so much in our path to healing. They asked me to share my story of what I overcame at their annual Domestic Violence event. Stories of Courage- I stood with Jack and Ronan speaking from a place of forgiveness, healing, hope, and strength.
