Tall coreopsis is dramatically illustrating its name this time of year. It grows as tall as nine feet with each stalk topped with an array of bright yellow two-inch diameter flowers that are favored by pollinators. This big stand is in the native seed nursery at Blue Creek Metropark and seeds will be harvested for use in tallgrass prairie restorations across . It favors full sun and light shade and is an excellent low maintenance perennial to consider as a backdrop for home plantings.

The night brought a lunar eclipse but Thursday morning's sunrise was special, too. Here the sun rises over the Blue Grass Island channel at Side Cut Metropark,
viewed from one of the many scenic pull-offs provided. They come complete with benches for relaxing while you drink in the view.

Sometimes the female praying mantis adds a horrific meaning to "love hurts." After mating the female occasionally kills the smaller male, biting off his head and consuming her mate for added protein. It's said this rarely occurs, and most often in captivity. While often referred to as a "preying" mantis, this large insect properly carries the moniker of praying mantis, which is a nod to the insect typically holding its forelegs in a praying position. Those forelegs are barbed to improve its grasp, making it possible for it to capture larger prey. As insects go, praying mantis are large -- up to about five inches long for the females. In spite of that size they are well camouflaged and often overlooked. This mantis was on goldenrod in a meadow at Secor Metropark.

A white-tailed deer doe and her triplet fawns -- one is mostly hidden behind the doe -- are a testament to the prime habitat to be found along segments of the Chessie Circle Trail. Only about 10 percent of the whitetail births result in triplets. The 11-mile multi-use rail-trail follows the old Toledo Terminal Railroad right-of-way and involves a number of partners including Metroparks Toledo, the City of Toledo, the University of Toledo and the Wood County Park District.

A practically total lunar eclipse tonight will cover 96 percent of the moon with Earth's shadow. It will be visible across North America beginning at 9:23 p.m. with the maximum eclipse at 12:12 a.m., ending at 3:01 a.m.

A special Star Struck program tonight at 10 p.m. at Cannonball Prairie Metropark will be an opportunity to view the eclipse through a telescope and watch the moon turn red. Amateur astronomer Jim Gasser will be there to explain the science behind the spectacle. Sign up to participate at the link below.

🎷 Tonight's Jazz in the Garden, presented by Citizens for Metroparks 🎷

It's a scene endlessly repeated in Metroparks wetlands and waterways until winter seals everything with ice. Herons and egrets stalking, plunging, catching, cleaning, and eating fish. Those species thrive because their food sources here are plentiful not just for the adults but enough to raise their young. These late summer images were captured in Howard Marsh Metropark against a backdrop of cattails.
