We’re taking some time off the road to settle into and enjoy our new home here in New Mexico. Today we jumped onto the Rail Runner for a train ride from Santa Fe to Duke City for the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. The event brings balloonists from around the world for this incredible weeklong celebration featuring an array of hundreds of brightly colored and creatively designed hot air balloons. It's tough to capture even in these photos the sight of so many giant balloons floating this way and that along the stunning natural backdrop of this amazing city. If you are ever given the opportunity to visit New Mexico during the Balloon Fiesta or anytime during the year, be sure to do it and experience the best kept secret this country has to offer!

And not to worry, the BammStarr Gap Year Tour of the U.S. will continue! Just need to plug a small leak on Outtie's roof and we are back in business!

It’s the annual tarantula mating season in New Mexico and so naturally Joe and I are on the hunt to see these giant fuzzy creatures in nature during the Tarantula Rut.

We’re doing all we can to hunker down as Hurricane Polo prepares to pummel us into oblivion here in New Mexico. We can only hope and pray the two cases of w**e, three bags of corn nuts and multiple bottles of unlabeled assorted spirits will be enough to see us through this potentially catastrophic weather event.

We’ve spent the last week exploring northern Arizona. We feel like the Grand Canyon is a bit overstated, so we ventured through some of the other sites around Flagstaff.

We climbed Elden Mountain accidentally and then regrettably. Took a trip to Sedona, but couldn’t walk well after the previous day’s hike, so we enjoyed the sights from the truck.

We almost saw the Meteor Crater, but didn’t feel like it was worth the $30 price tag, so we sat outside and imagined a large hole in the ground for free.

Then off to the Petrified Forest, where we stayed overnight in the vast open sky and torrential rains.

The past couple days, here at Stop 46 in the St. Luis Valley just outside Alamosa, Colorado, have been incredibly relaxing. The views out here are stunning and they go on forever. And we arrived at the perfect time with the annual car show in town. The number of classic cars running around the city the past few days had us turning our heads every which way to catch a glimpse of so many cool old rides. We made a quick side trip to the UFO Watchtower to take in the interesting sights of this place paying tribute to otherworldly beings and their connection to our world. We will definitely need to consider a return trip here with our friends Ross and Michael when they come to visit, and we can’t wait to hear if Esther and Sunnydaze & Co. notice any new customers from other dimensions after we placed a Freshies as a netherworld offering at one of the two portals to other worlds that according to two professional psychics exist on the grounds. A Saturday morning hike up the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve was tough and scary at times but worth every step for the view up top. There were also the views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains from our Nylander Acres Harvest Host campsite.

Now we’re headed home to Santa Fe for a short break before heading back out for another chapter of the Gap Year adventure!

While we announced “mission accomplished” about a month ago in Nebraska regarding the whole Outtie Gap Year Chevy Beretta search campaign, we never stop trying to track down more of these famously obsolete and widely troubled automotive legends. During our stop in Alamosa, Colorado at the annual Early Iron Festival car show, our ongoing hunt came up successful when we spotted this hotrod beauty. The owner claims (and Joe claims to believe it true) that it’s the fastest nitrous racer in the country.
