This lake trout was just tagged on 5/9/2022 during the Wisconsin DNR annual spring lake trout assessment at a station right west of Sand Island (Apostle Islands, WI). At that time it was 22.7 inches. We caught it near Taconite Harbor MN on 9/5/22 and it was 23.5 inches.

It's always fun to find out the information on the tagged fish we catch.

Steelhead tag #51413 was tagged in the Neebing River, Ontario Canada on April 28th, 2020. It was a male and measured 532mm at the time it was tagged. In addition to being tagged, it was also given a front dorsal clip as part of a mark recapture study. This fish spent 2 years in the stream as a juvenile parr before migrating out in Lake Superior where it lived as an immature smolt for 1 year. It reached maturation at age 3 and was on its 3rd spawning run when it was tagged at age 5. When this fish was caught near Taconite Harbor on 8/22/2022 it would have been 7 years old.

Spring is finally here and the boat will be hitting the big lake soon. Can't wait to be back on the water again. In the mean time I will be watching my first mate finish her Senior year softball season and graduation in June.
