Fire ban is lifted for the BWCA! Weather patterns have shifted with the impending arrival of fall and that means lower fire danger.

Speaking of fall, fall hours at Sawbill start September 1st.
8am - 7pm, seven days a week

Like any good Minnesotan knows, sometimes if you want a thing done right, you just gotta do it yourself.

Minnesota Governor Walz did that this morning by signing Executive Order 26-10, directing crucial state-level protections for the Boundary Waters watershed from corrupt foreign billionaires and their sulfide-ore mining companies.

Today we drove down the Sawbill Trail, into Grand Marais, and then up the Gunflint Trail, all to meet with our neighbors and local leaders to discuss the community impacts that the Boundary Waters Closure has on our respective businesses.

It was good to hug friends, share information, and have a chance to talk about current and future needs for our region. Northeastern Minnesota is remote and isolated, and although that presents unique challenges it also attracts a unique type of person to live here. The type that is resilient and creative. That was on full display today as we worked together to support our community through this rough time.

I'm not sure you could ask for a nicer summer day up here. Sunshine, 75 degrees, calm breeze, no bugs!

Starting today, campfires will be allowed in established campgrounds again. That includes Sawbill Lake Campground. S'mores are back on the menu!

There is still a fire ban in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness until further notice.

It's official! Overnight permits in the Sawbill area will be good to go starting this Thursday, July 30th!

Taking time to fill our own cups, literally and figuratively. Living on the edge of the Wilderness comes with lots of perks, and berry season is a big one of them.

Merry Christmas in July!

Things are plugging along up here, we continue to have very typical July conditions. It's still very quiet with only about 15 sites out of 51 occupied in the Sawbill campground and the majority of our canoes still on the racks in the canoe yard.

If you're looking to get into the Boundary Waters yet this season, day tripping in the Sawbill Area will be open starting Monday, July 27th!

The Forest Service has announced their intention to reopen a portion of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, including the Sawbill area, effective Thursday, July 30th! If circumstances change, that proposal could change too, but as it stands now that's the plan.

We are actively working on ways to support our friends and colleagues who will continue to be affected by closure areas in Ely and the end of the Gunflint so stay tuned for ways you can help.

More details coming BUT! Daytrips in the Sawbill Area will be open beginning Monday, July 27th!!!

The Sawbill Campground is open, canoes are available, and we are so excited to see you.

Overnight permits are being cancelled through Wednesday, July 29th. More to come on that later.

No news continues to be good news around here.
No new fire activity, and we're expecting to hear from the Forest Service tomorrow about permits for Saturday, July 25th and beyond.

Air quality is good, and the blueberries are starting to ripen. But for missing all of you, it feels like a prime time summer day around here!
