Effective Saturday, June 6th, there is a fire ban in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area until further notice.

Camp stoves with an on/off switch are allowed.

Campgrounds like the Sawbill Lake campground that are outside the Wilderness area may still have campfires (very carefully).

We rent and sell MSR camp stoves and sell white gas, propane and Isopro fuel at the Sawbill store!

While a fire ban is a bummer, it's an important tool to keep our forests and homes safe during times of high fire danger. Fingers crossed for rain 🤞

The Kelso Loop is a much loved day trip in the Sawbill area. It takes you through Sawbill, Alton and Kelso Lakes. Each of the lakes has a unique scene and as a whole it's a great intro to the Boundary Waters. It's certainly one of our favorites, no matter the season!

Normally we take canoes out a bit earlier, but we had some tree work being done so we delayed just a little. Things are warming up and we've even started to notice a few budding bushes, green up will be here soon!

Ice out on Sawbill! It was out by the evening of May 5th, with one small ice flow blocking the landing. This morning, May 6, even that ice flow is gone! It's forecasted to get down to 24 tonight so skim ice is still a possibility and that water is COLD.

Word on the street is that lots of lakes in the region went out yesterday with the high winds and rain. We are anxious to join the club, maybe by the end of the day today??

This is a do as we say not as we do sorta situation 😆 This old aluminum canoe only does ice checks nowadays, and we always have a rope attached and extra folks standing by in case of an accidental polar plunge.

Ice news is 12" on May 2nd and 10" on May 3rd. Progress!

May 1 ice update! While permit quota season starts today, paddling is still a little ways off. It was below freezing over night again, and is in the upper 30's today so not great melting conditions. Sawyer measured 14" of ice.

April is going out with a snow squall!

Sawbill Creek is running high today! Still too much snow on the unplowed campground roads to drive through, and walking was a little tough with how soft and deep it is. Worth it to check out the conditions, though!
