Cracked seat mount? You’re not alone
This is one of the hardest-working spots on any sit-on-top kayak. Every push-off, every hard lean, every re-entry from the water funnels load straight into those seat mounting points. Add a few seasons of UV, salt, and a stainless bolt slowly corroding in a plastic hull, and the polyethylene finally says enough — a crack radiating from the insert out to the corner of the recess.
The fix isn’t epoxy. It isn’t Flex Seal. It isn’t a slather of 5200. Polyethylene won’t bond to any of it.
Step one is the one everybody skips: stop-drilling the crack. Find the very tip of the crack and drill a small hole right at the end of it. All the stress in a cracked hull concentrates at that sharp point — leave it there and the crack keeps traveling, even through a fresh weld. A round hole spreads that load out and stops the run cold. Miss the tip and you’re just welding over a problem that’s still growing.
From there it’s proper plastic welding — V-groove the crack out, clean back to fresh material, fuse matching HDPE rod into the channel. On a high-stress area like this we also embed stainless wire mesh into the weld: it works like rebar in concrete, spreading load across the repair instead of letting it concentrate back on the original crack line.
