Interesting comparison today between 2 turkey guns in for a post season cleanup.

You hear a lot of talk about gas-driven guns vs inertia-driven guns, and these are good examples of each.

The camo gun is a Wi******er SX3, a good example of a modern-ish gas gun. The black gun is a Benelli Super Black Eagle 1, one of the guns that brought the inertia system to prominence.

Between the 2, note how many fewer critical parts there are in the Benelli. As a general rule, gas guns like the Wi******er get dirtier, faster. That doesn't mean you should ignore your inertia guns though.

If anyone has any questions about these operating systems or would like to read about how they work in detail, or maybe some pros/cons to each, drop it in the comments. I can always do a followup post.

Calendar reads May 19th, which means the spring turkey seasons are officially behind us. To say this spring was anything but a personal success in the turkey woods would be an understatement. Usually this time of year, I languish how frustrating these birds can be, today I'm remembering how incredible it can be when everything comes together. I've got a handful of great memories and stories to tell for years to come.

I hope all of you found some success this spring, or at the very least found something to remember.

That said, spring seasons bring their own challenges for your fi****ms. Perhaps chief among them is environmental moisture. NOW is the time to get them in for cleaning and service before problems set in during the summer months. Drop me a text or call.

This is NOT a before and after photo.

This is the difference between the inward and outward facing sides of a Wi******er Model 12 bolt. Note how the outward facing side (while certainly showing some age and wear) has been kept relatively clean, while the inward facing side has years of oil and residue build up.

Who knows how long it's been since this thing has been apart for some TLC, but given that it was manufactured in the early 20s it could have been a little while.

Just goes to show that external cleaning and oiling is rarely enough, and that goes for new guns as well as old. Make the appointment to get yours in for a spring cleanup.

Who says old dogs need to learn new tricks?

I always enjoying see these old gals out doing what they were built to do, but it's a real treat to get it done with one myself.

This tom came in perfect. A padauk pot call made by Tyler Rouse had him all fired up, and this 1897 Wi******er (circa 1916) put a load of no. 5s right where it needed to be.

Take care of them and feed them shells they were designed for, and these old guns will do their part.
