When the GOAT and I discussed me coaching club swimming he said to me “make sure as a young coach that you do not try to please them all. You never will. Trying to please them all will only make you sacrifice what you know is best for the swimmer”……... 25 plus year later there has never been better words of advice given to me by anyone.

Athletes love when they are praised and told they are great or told good job all the time. Unfortunately this isn’t what they always need to hear. Way too many coaches in all sports constantly praising when in a lot of cases that isn’t what they always need to hear. Especially in swimming. Creating mentally tough swimmers isn’t easy, especially now. The coaches job is to be honest. Mixing praise in when it’s deserved is important but the growth and mental toughness is built when the athlete is told that what they are giving isn’t enough. When the athlete takes ownership of their athletic success is when you see actual growth and accountability. Holding them to the standard that they can always give more or do more is what creates athletes that succeed and this goes for all sports….. especially swimming.

Ain’t that the truth! We as club coaches see the hard journey from the beginning. Dealing with swim parents.. Working hard everyday to fix strokes. Trying to manage teenage girls issues. Growing pains. Drama after drama. The list goes on and on and finally when they become mature enough to figure out what you are trying to do…… BAM the college coach takes over. They get a more mature swimmer because of the hard work the club team put in!
