Ziran Movement Classes:

Tai Chi & Qi Gong Class
Tuesday, 7:00 - 8:00 AM (Thousand Oaks, CA)

Quan Fa Class
Thursday 7:00 - 8:00 AM (Thousand Oaks, CA)

The Tai Chi class is focused on promoting good health through practicing the ancient art form of Tai Ji Quan. Tai Chi has a slow gentle pace and is often called moving meditation. It has been helping people stay healthy for hundreds of years! The class is open to all fitness and skill levels. The benefits of practicing Tai Chi are well documented, including increased mental focus, circulation and bone density, as well as strengthening the cardiovascular and immune systems. The class will include stretching exercises that promote mobility and longevity; Qi Gong practice (breathing exercises) which nourishes vitality and health; and Tai Chi form work (moving meditation), which combines Qi Gong with flowing sequences of movement. The style of Tai Ji Quan we present is from the the Yang Family lineage, through the Yang Ban Hou line (Guang Ping). The Quan Fa (Kung Fu) class presents a combination of multiple styles of Quan Fa within the Ziran Shen Quan (Natural Spirit Fist) system, including Northern Shaolin, Tibetan White Crane, Natural Style, and the Emperor's Long Fist system, which was the predecessor of internal styles Xing Yi Quan, Ba Gua Zhang, and Tai Ji Quan. This class presents a system of martial arts training focused on the cultivation of Qi, intellect and physical strength and agility (Qi, Cho and Li) through rigorous practice and mental discipline. Skills include practice of multiple empty hand and weapons forms, sparring, ground boxing, grappling, and throwing arts. Students are admitted to class through an interview process. Contact Sifu Ted Lizée for additional information. Qi Gong (Qi Work/Exercise) is a deliberate and specifically prescribed set of techniques and exercises that cultivates one's personal connection to Qi. Yi Quan (Intention Fist) is a unique system of Qi Gong that is focused on building the fluency of directed intention rather than focusing on mastery of physical motions. Where the intention goes, the Qi follows. Practice in this manner promotes the free flow of Qi throughout the body, which nourishes and supports health and vitality. When we over use physical force, our Qi is blocked, when our Qi is blocked, our intent is stifled, when our intent is stifled, our spirit is distracted. The study and practice of Yi Quan shows you a way to tap into your Qi, and build a connection that will grow with diligent practice. Qi Gong brings you into the present moment, which lets you disconnect from other concerns for a moment, allowing the pressures of life to drop away, and lets calmness descend, even amidst a storm. Yi Quan is a derivative of Xing Yi Quan (Form and Will / Intention Boxing / Fist) , which is one of the three main "Internal" schools of Chinese Martial Arts. Yi Quan was developed by Wang Xiangzhai (1885-1963), a life-long dedicated student of Xing Yi Quan, where he parred down the emphasis on physical motions and techniques and re-directed the focus to the mastery of intent.

Taiji Quan, also known as Tai Chi, is an internal Chinese martial art. Tai (太) is great or large, Ji (極) is the central ridge pole of a building, with implications to the Earth’s pole, or the celestial pole star (Polaris or North Star). Together, Taiji is the “Great Polarity”, represented by the Yin Yang symbol, signifying the interdependence and duality of nature, solid and hollow, full and empty, dark and light, night and day, etc. Quan (拳) is boxing, pugilism, or fist. One translation of Taiji Quan is “Great Polarity Boxing”.

Taiji Quan is a formidable system of boxing, with focus on a central axis in the body and clear division between full and empty in each movement. The body moves in a balanced and coordinated way with a unified connection between mind (intention) and body. Movements are smooth and flowing, and done with structural integrity. Taiji Quan study includes practice of a series of movements (Taiji form) and martial application of these movements, and push hands (tui shou 推手). Push hands is a two-person exercise where you work on implementing and testing your Taiji Quan movements and develop listening skills and sensitivity, coupled with issuing force, which are the yin and yang aspects of the art form. This is done while maintaining a rooted connection to the ground, yet being able to be light and nimble, as needed.

At Ziran Movement, we study Yang Family Taiji Quan, practicing the Yang Guang Ping form through the Yang Ban Hou lineage, via Kuo Lien Ying and William T. R. Chung. Beyond the martial arts aspects of the art form, there are many health benefits woven into the practice of Taiji Quan, as it promotes physical balance and coordination, is beneficial for cardiovascular and cognitive health, and promotes mental calmness and an overall sense of well being.

Taiji Quan is my chosen practice of movement, which is so important to maintain throughout our lives. Having a movement practice integrated into our lives enables us to maintain confidence in our movements and develop deeper connections to ourselves and our bodies.

Acupuncture is one of the primary treatment modalities in East Asian Medicine. Acupuncture consists of inserting sterile, ultra-fine, single-use needles into selected “points” along the channels of the body. This stimulates the body in a specific way and sends a message to elicit a change, or support the natural healing processes of the body.

The more I delve into this medicine, the more I realize how our bodies are these amazing and complex systems of interconnectedness, on the physical, emotional and spiritual levels. I have found that acupuncture is a way to connect with your body and the healing processes we all go through. Similar to my life-long pursuit of the martial arts, I know I will always be captivated by this medicine.
