STORY TIME!!! Shout out to Kate Whiting and John Storey who came to my rescue two weeks ago when I was driving back from the State 4-H Horse Show! It was Saturday night around 9:30pm and I had just come off the ramp and was merging on to I-75 South! I heard a terrible noise so I pulled the horse trailer to the side of the road.
I got out with my phone turned on the flashlight, walked around, checking all the tires. I really thought I had blown a tire. After walking around the trailer and seeing that everything looked fine, I got back in the truck and eased down the road, but the noise was even louder. I pulled over a second time and thought that maybe I was dragging something and that’s when I noticed that my mounting block was not on the back of my truck!
As I walked around the trailer so I could see if anything was under the trailer, in one violent moment I was slammed to the ground! (There was a very deep hole!) My left knee immediately started swelling and for a minute I thought, “There ain’t no way I’m going to be able to get up!”
I finally did stand and the first person I called was Kate! She said that she was on the way! I managed to get back in the truck so that I could try to go backwards to try to get the block under the trailer out but it was wedged tight in between the axles!
Next I called 911 but they never showed up! (And I was there over an hour!) When Kate arrived we tried to see if we could get the mounting block unstuck but nothing was working so she called John! John showed up with a jack but we couldn’t jack it up high enough! We tried to drive it up on a thick piece of wood and then tried a bag of shavings but nothing worked!
John ended up crawling under my trailer and using a saw to cut the mounting block up and that helped but it was still stuck! Kate ended up crawling under my trailer, attaching a ratchet strap and John snatched it out with his truck!
John and Kate - ya’ll are my heroes! And a shout out to my 3 bay mares (Flo, Jade and Mooney) they were absolute saints! You really can’t make this stuff up!!!
