Yesterday was a bittersweet day for the Athens Girls Golf team. The girls began the day by receiving some very sad news... We learned that Coach Rodney Burgess passed away yesterday morning after an extended illness. We hope that he knew how special that he was to the girls and how much that they appreciated all that he did for them.

We ended the day on a happier note. Senior Ellie Beck-Aden had her Signing Day Ceremony, and most of her golf teammates joined her for the special moment. Ellie will continue her academic and athletic career at Grace College, playing softball and majoring in Environmental Studies.

As a quick reminder, we have a really special event coming up on Thursday. Ellie is having her Signing Day Ceremony on Thursday, November 13 at 6 p.m. in the Athens High School Atrium. (This ceremony is the day after AHS' National Signing Day event because Ellie wanted to include some special guests who couldn't be there on the previous day due to signing day events at other schools.)

We invite anyone who has supported or encouraged Ellie-Kate along the way to join us for this celebration. We're excited to celebrate this truly special milestone with those who can attend.

Ellie Beck-Aden is having her Signing Day Ceremony on Thursday, November 13 in the Athens High School Atrium, and we invite friends, teammates, coaches, and others who have encouraged or supported her along the way to join us for this special event. We're going to have pizza and other refreshments afterwards. We look forward to celebrating this really special milestone next month!

Ellie Beck-Aden represented Athens High School and Southeastern Ohio well at the OHSAA D1 Girls Golf Championship at Firestone Country Club in Akron this past weekend. She had her practice round on Saturday and competed in Rounds One and Two on Sunday and Monday. Highlights of her rounds included multiple birdies and pars as well as an EAGLE on Hole 5 during Round 1! She finished 31st out of 72 golfers with an 83 (Round 1) and an 82 (Round 2) on the difficult and long course. Congratulations on a successful tournament and high school career, Ellie!

Congratulations to Ellie Beck-Aden on becoming the first-ever AHS golfer to become District Champion! At last Thursday's District tournament, she was the only golfer to break 80. Her score of 79 enabled her to earn District Medalist honors. With the win, she became the first-ever golfer from Athens to become a two-time state qualifier, and she will represent the district as its only individual qualifier at the OHSAA D1 Girls State Golf Championship at Firestone Golf Club in Akron on October 12-13. Ellie finished two strokes ahead of the second-place golfer from Circleville (81). Golfers from Jackson and Washington Court House tied for third place with a 82. (These four golfers were also the top four finishers at the sectional at Jaycees Golf Club.)

Congratulations also to the AHS Girls Golf team for their first-ever qualification for Districts as a team. The team did a terrific job, and qualifying for Districts was a tremendous capstone to an already historic season.
