KNICKS STATE OF MIND: GAME DAY PREVIEW

THE CHAMPIONSHIP DEFENSE STARTS TONIGHT!

Knicks Nation, WE ARE BACK! After bringing a championship back to New York, the Knicks raise the banner at Madison Square Garden and begin their title defense against a revamped Philadelphia 76ers squad.

THE MATCHUP
New York Knicks 🆚 Philadelphia 76ers

Madison Square Garden
Tip-off: 7:00 PM ET
NBC / Peacock

KNICKS PLAYERS TO WATCH

• Jalen Brunson: The Finals MVP leads the charge. Expect him to set the tone with his scoring, leadership, and clutch playmaking.
• Karl-Anthony Towns: His ability to stretch the floor and dominate the boards will be crucial against Joel Embiid.
• Mikal Bridges: His two-way game and perimeter defense will be important against Philadelphia’s loaded lineup.
• OG Anunoby: A key defensive weapon who can make life difficult for the Sixers’ stars.
• Josh Hart: Energy, hustle, rebounding, and winning plays—the things Knicks fans love.

PHILADELPHIA’S CHALLENGE

The Sixers bring a star-studded lineup featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, LeBron James, and rising talent VJ Edgecombe. Their offensive firepower makes this a serious opening-night test for the defending champions.

KEYS TO A KNICKS VICTORY

1. Control the boards and limit second-chance points.
2. Make Philadelphia work defensively with ball movement.
3. Contain Maxey’s speed and pe*******on.
4. Force tough shots and avoid costly turnovers.
5. Feed off the energy of the Garden on banner night!

THE BIG QUESTION: Can the Knicks start their championship defense with a statement win, or will the Sixers spoil the celebration?

🏀 KNICKS STATE OF MIND
MORE THAN A NUMBER

The Knicks are working on their roster. NBA 2K27 has delivered its ratings. And both have New York asking the same question:

How much is a player really worth to a winning team?

The latest reported camp additions include John Konchar, Drew Eubanks, Bruce Brown, Ochai Agbaji and James Wiseman. A September contract means an opportunity—not a guaranteed place in the rotation. For the Knicks, the challenge is finding somebody who can make the right play when called upon.

Meanwhile, here’s how NBA 2K27 currently rates New York’s core:

🔵 Jalen Brunson: 96
đźź  Karl-Anthony Towns: 93
🔵 OG Anunoby: 88
đźź  Mikal Bridges: 84
🔵 Josh Hart: 82
đźź  Miles McBride: 78

KSOM’S TAKE: Mostly fair. But there’s room for an argument.

Brunson’s 96 feels right. His footwork, shot creation and ability to organize the offense put him in elite company. When a possession gets ugly, he can still find an answer.

Towns at 93 is more debatable. His shooting and rebounding give New York tremendous offensive flexibility. KSOM would lean toward 91–92, placing greater weight on defensive consistency and decision-making. Still, his unusual offensive skill set makes 93 defensible.

OG at 88? Fair, with a case for 89. His value includes the difficult assignments he takes and how naturally he fits alongside the primary scorers.

Bridges at 84? Reasonable. An 84–85 range fits our assessment of his complementary role.

Hart at 82? That’s our biggest disagreement.

The rebound in traffic. The push up the floor. The extra pass. The loose ball that saves a possession. Those contributions help everybody else succeed. KSOM would put Hart at 84–85 and McBride at 79–80.

Then comes the comparison that connects the ratings directly to New York’s roster changes:

MITCHELL ROBINSON: 80.
ANDRE DRUMMOND: 76.

With Robinson departing for Boston and Drummond joining the Knicks, the individual attributes deserve attention.

Robinson leads in offensive rebounding, 98–94; shot blocking, 88–78; interior defense, 83–75; and help defense IQ, 87–74.

Drummond leads in defensive rebounding, 91–87.

That’s a more revealing picture than a four-point overall difference. Within the game’s assessment, Drummond provides serious rebounding value, while Robinson offers a stronger defensive presence around the basket.

Mitch’s 80 is defensible, although KSOM would lean toward 81–82. His 98 offensive rebounding already recognizes an exceptional specialty. His limited offensive versatility makes the overall debate more complicated.

For New York, the question is how the new center rotation handles all those responsibilities together. Rebounding is one part. Protecting the basket, rotating correctly and finishing defensive possessions are others.

These are video-game ratings, not predictions. Our proposed adjustments are opinions. A full assessment of 2K’s accuracy would also require examining badges, attributes and actual gameplay.

But the basketball point holds: a player’s usefulness depends on what the team needs from him.

The next addition might never earn an impressive overall rating. He could still earn the Garden’s respect by making the play that matters.

Who got shortchanged most: Hart, Deuce or Mitch? And how comfortable are you with Drummond taking on those frontcourt minutes?
