25 Years! It's crazy to think that I moved to Texarkana and started teaching combat martial arts 25 years ago. I was fortunate to have trained Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo under some great people.

At the time, Texarkana only had karate and tae kwon do for martial arts.

The truth is that I never planned on teaching but I just wanted to keep training, so Texarkana Jiu Jitsu was born!

I began training BJJ in 1995, and was one of the first people in Texas to train in the amazing art. I've been a black belt and teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu longer than anyone else in town or in the area has been training.

I combined BJJ with my experience in judo, wrestling, and the striking arts to start teaching MMA at a time when the sport was so new. It has been a lot of fun! Many competed in MMA or BJJ.

The truth is though that most didn't compete. They just came in for other reasons.

Parents would want their kids to develop focus, fitness, self defense, overcome bullying, and to get more active.

Adults would want something that was fun to do to get in shape, lose weight, develop positive habits, self defense, reduce stress, and more.

Along the way, it's been amazing to see thousands of kids, teens, adult men and women transform their lives.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the real 10 year challenge.

Last night Texarkana Jiu Jitsu's head coach, Marc Hagebusch, promoted 3 people to black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This is a huge accomplishment!

You've probably seen the facebook 10 year picture challenge. It's not really challenging to age.

The real challenge is all the things that we've been able to accomplish between those to points in time.

Few things in life are as rewarding as earning a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

It's not the belt.

It's what it represents... the great times you've had, the fitness, confidence, stress relief, competitions, and lifetime friends you've made that matter so much more.

They come together in one nicely tied belt around your waist that demonstrates an accomplishment that tells everyone that you have an amazing level of commitment and discipline to overcome any challenge before you.

End bullying by giving your child the tools and the confidence they need to succeed.

We got a message from a parent of a past student this morning.

Kross trained Jiu Jitsu with us for some time before moving out of town. His son was recently attacked by a larger kid who was trying to intimidate him.

Kross took him down and controlled him without hurting him even though he could have done so.

Kross knew he could handle the situation. He wasn't fearful. He didn't try to run away. He didn't hurt the other kid. He handled the conflict confidently.

This is how Jiu Jitsu can help your child. They develop real skills and confidence in themselves. They don't become a bully. They also don't live in fear.

What's The Best Way To Get Your Child In Shape?

This dog ran in Texarkana Jiu Jitsu yesterday on Stateline Ave, across from Holiday Bowl.

He is very cute, pretty calm, and gets along fine with dogs. He's a Lab mix, probably about 5 months old, and neutered.
